What actually “counts” as trauma?

It’s a question we hear often and one that many people quietly struggle with. Because trauma isn’t just about what happened… it’s about how your nervous system experienced it.

You don’t need to have gone through something extreme for it to have left an impact. Feeling overwhelmed, unsupported, unsafe, or alone in a moment can shape how your body and mind respond long after the experience is over.

If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking, “It wasn’t that bad, so why does it still affect me?” this might resonate.

Read more below!

Not all trauma is obvious. Learn what counts as trauma, common signs, and how it may still affect your thoughts, relationships, and nervous system.

“Everything turned out okay… so why can’t I move on?”

Birth trauma is increasingly understood as a nervous system response, not just a medical outcome.

Feeling unsupported, out of control, or unsafe during birth can leave a lasting imprint even when there are minimal complications.

In this latest blog article, we explore the signs, impact, and pathways to healing.

Whether it's been days, weeks, or years since your birth trauma, you deserve healing and support.

Not every birth story feels joyful.

Maybe things moved very quickly and felt out of control. Maybe there were unexpected complications or an emergency C-section. Maybe you remember feeling frightened, helpless, or unheard in the delivery room.

And now, weeks or months later, parts of the experience still feel stuck.

You might find yourself replaying moments from the birth. Certain memories may feel overwhelming, or your body may still react as if the danger is still present.

Many parents feel pressure to move on quickly after childbirth, especially when their baby is healthy. But difficult birth experiences deserve care and attention too.

Birth trauma is more common than people realize, and it can have a real impact on postpartum mental health.

In our latest blog post, we explore how EMDR therapy can help the brain process traumatic birth experiences so that the memories no longer feel so intense or distressing.

Healing is possible. You don’t have to process this alone.

You can read the article and learn more about EMDR therapy through the link in our bio. If you’re ready to talk, you can also book an appointment with one of our therapists.

A traumatic birth can impact postpartum mental health long after delivery. Learn how EMDR therapy helps process birth trauma, reduce PTSD symptoms, and support emotional recovery for new mothers.

We are so lucky and excited to welcome Celina Jensen to our team of talented counsellors!

Celina is a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC) who brings a unique and deeply trauma-informed perspective to her work with clients.

Before becoming a counsellor, she spent nearly two decades working with the United Nations in the international humanitarian sector, supporting communities facing chronic instability and crisis across regions such as Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Haiti, and Georgia.

This experience continues to shape her trauma-informed clinical approach today.

Celina works with individuals navigating trauma, anxiety, burnout, and the impact of high-stress environments. She often supports helping professionals, first responders, veterans, and working professionals who carry significant responsibility in both their careers and personal lives.

Her approach integrates evidence-based therapies including EMDR, parts work (IFS-informed), narrative therapy, and somatic practices, helping clients process difficult experiences, regulate their nervous systems, and move toward greater clarity and emotional steadiness.

Celina is now accepting new clients for individual counselling in Port Moody and online across BC.
