💗 A Reminder for Our qathet Community — 2026 💗

Every year, women in our community face breast cancer and other breast surgeries — and too many still don’t know that supportive bras, compression garments, and prosthetics are meant to be used starting right at surgery, not just months later.

Through Kompassion for Kups, I’m honoured to support women in the qathet region with post-surgical and everyday breast care, including fittings for mastectomy and lumpectomy patients — all provided locally and with compassion.

Whether you’re newly diagnosed, preparing for surgery, healing, or living life after treatment, you deserve comfort, proper support, and dignity every step of the way.

These three easy steps are so important: Touch, Look and get Checked (TLC). Know what's normal for you, so you can recognise any changes and get checked by a GP.

We encourage people to build a regular check your breasts habit into their routine, just like brushing your teeth.

When I started Kompassion for Kups, it was with one goal in mind — to make sure women in our own qathet community have local access to the care and products they need after breast surgery.

“I didn’t feel any pain. There were no other symptoms besides the lump. It’s like the mind doesn’t believe that you are sick.”

In 2019, Salimeh was 7 months pregnant when she noticed an abnormal lump in her breast.

She mentioned it to her doctor at her next appointment. An ultrasound confirmed the lump was serious, and a follow-up biopsy confirmed it was cancerous.

Salimeh was diagnosed with HER2-positive, hormonal-negative breast cancer.

At 35 years old, Salimeh was shocked. There had been cancer in her family, but never at a young age.

“My immediate reaction was: ‘what do we do next?’”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – an important time to raise awareness by sharing powerful stories like Salimeh’s.🩷

Staging describes or classifies a cancer based on how much cancer there is in the body and where it is when first diagnosed.

Having more information about these stages can help you understand your diagnosis, communicate with your health care team, and ask the right questions.

Hello, qathet Regional District friends! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1 in 8 women in Canada are to be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Sadly, it is even higher for First Nation women.

As the only recognized medical garment and prosthetics provider for the qathet Region, I highly encourage all women to get their mammograms. Early detection saves LIVES.
