Heads up, traffic will be impacted on the John Hart Bridge this October.
A single lane of southbound traffic is closed for one week starting October 1. Then, both southbound lanes are closed for two weeks starting October 9. Detours will be in place. Please obey all signage and drive carefully through the area during this time.
The closure will allow crews to upgrade essential wastewater infrastructure underneath the bridge. Earlier this summer, a leak in the pipe was identified. A temporary containment unit was created to minimize the spill. The leak, which underscores the urgency of this project, was caused by aging infrastructure as the pipes were installed in 1977 and need upgrades.
Every day, three million litres of wastewater pass through the forcemain, which services the entire north side of the river, including North Nechako and the Hart. Once the new line is installed, the existing line can be isolated and replaced, creating a redundant system in the event of a breakage. The "twinning" of the lines will also increase capacity, allowing for future growth and development. The new line will span approximately 1,300 metres.
