Have you ever tried to guess what someone is thinking? The ability to place yourself in another person’s shoes is a key cognitive skill that is often lost in dementia.

In our latest blog post, our founder explains the importance of "Theory of Mind" in dementia care:

Theory of Mind is the ability to understand that other people have their own thoughts, feelings, and perspectives. This skill helps us get along with others, predict what they’ll do, and show kindness in meaningful ways.

The first weeks of recovery after stroke are marked by a miracle few health professionals talk about.

Let me explain the miracle of post-stroke pain.

As the brain heals, skeletal muscles transition away from flaccidity (i.e. feeling limp) towards a cramp-like state. We call this spasticity. Spasticity results from muscles receiving "flickering, staticky signals" from a brain just starting to repair its connection to the body.

This moment. (A miraculous testament of the brain's ability to heal.) It is the most stressful part in the stroke recovery trajectory for patients.

The awakening of previously "dead" muscles is often marked by cramps, shooting pains and a sensation of tension/pressure. People become fearful of their own body awakening... and paradoxically wish it were "dead" again.

Many health professionals overlook the experience of "muscles awakening" and instead re-frame this symptom as a disorder in and of itself. Instead of working to improve someone's joint flexibility and psychological well-being, many colleagues focus on eliminating the spasticity.

You can imagine that I take a more enlightened view of spasticity treatment via ConsortiaCare.ca Gentle massage, soothing movements and deepening the brain-body connection are all part of what I do. And, I can confidently say, this approach is backed by a robust base of evidence on interoception, motor coordination and neurological rehabilitation.

After two years of inactivity and social isolation, the rates of Type 2 Diabetes continue to climb in Canada. This is impacting the health of people across the country. We are only beginning to see dramatic spikes in heart disease, kidney failure and stroke from uncontrolled diabetes. Soon, the third wave of post-pandemic diabetes will place a significant burden on the health-care system. We are urging Canadians to take action, and to learn the facts about the health consequences of exercise intolerance and disorders of muscle metabolism.

If you can make it... join our founder, Adam Henley, for a frank discussion on YouTube Live about the topic:

Living Health Together

ConsortiaCare.ca provides enhanced home care services led by Registered Nurses (RN's) with added training in supportive care, counselling, nutrition & exercise coaching. When patients are referred and accepted into one of our home care programs, we provide an added layer of home supports to address problems before they happen and manage complex disease conditions at home. Our programs are more comprehensive than other options in the community. But, we specifically aim to improve health-related Quality of Life (HR-QoL), measuring what activities people have already given up alongside how their disease progressing. This information is vital for identifying the best care options & treatment approaches available to people at home.
