Like many, I like to set goals to give purpose to my days and my life. But as I learned in the Life Coaching course, the SMARTER the GOALS, the more attainable and therefore more successful they become. Also they are more likely to become instilled as habits, if that is also part of our goal.
An overall personal goal is to do 30 minutes of exercise (or my preferred term, ‘movement’, borrowed from an Indigenous Sacred Healing Circle plan) per day. I am sure we can all identify with “best laid plans” especially when not well thought out. So that is where I look to activities that can fit into a SMARTER goal plan, and also breaking down broad goals into more specific and therefore measurable ones. Also this makes it easier to publicize the goal, even amongst a couple of friends, thereby making oneself more accountable.
So let’s breakdown my goal to a more SPECIFIC one: Since I enjoy walking, and also beneficial to my dog Reece, I chose to participate in the Canadian Cancer Society 50 KM Dog Walk fundraiser in June. Not only beneficial to Reece and myself, but encourages donations towards cancer care in our country. 🤩
This goal is very MEASURABLE- 50 KM total over the month of June. This measuring becomes easier with not only my Fitbit watch but also a GPS Mark my Walk app on my phone. Then it is just tallying up the km’s. 🤓
ATTAINABLE: along with a challenge, definitely so. 😅
Very RELEVANT, not only for my wellbeing, but also in service to the many individuals diagnosed with cancer each day. 😊
TIME-BOUND: the month of June gives this goal boundaries. But whose to say I can’t continue it in slightly varied form in other months. 😉
I can EVALUATE the goal each time I go for a walk with Reece and add to the total distance. A feeling of accomplishment each step of the way! 🥳
And finally the REWARD(S) at the end of the month! Not only to have walked at least 50km, increasing Reece’s and my physical fitness and wellbeing, along with raising donations for a very worthy cause in helping others. 🥰
