NBL Combine: A Throwback

A throwback pic of my sideline views. After a 4 hour train ride, 60 minute sleep & 90 mine drive I attended this combine as a First Responder. I had just completed my Nationa Licensing Boards for the Canadian Athletic Therapy Association in Montreal the day before.

Call it adrenaline, momentum or delirium, but I considered the coverage a reward and reminder post three grueling, sleep deprived and yes, teary eyed filled days that: I MADE IT!

Before writing my exam, I suffered a horrible concussion that had me out of commission for 1.5 years with residual affects. During this time I was told by many specialists & sport psychologists that I may never be able to write my boards given how challenging my recovery had been.

I persevered against all the odds & not only passed my exams on my first attempt, have since then achieved so much I once thought was impossible.

Thank you to: My family, close friends and Cindy Hughes, Tracy Meloche, Darren Wharrie, Marcia Franklin & Dr. Laura Cruz.

Without knowing it, you saved me. Your belief and help taught me to value my small successes and to not be defeated by hopeless moments in my life.

When you love what you do, you wouldn't have it any other way:

This picture captures a day when it was 40° Celsius, then it decided to rain, then the sun decided to come out again, then a thunderstorm kicked in followed by more sunshine!

We are drenched to the bone but still smiling, and that's why I love what I do!

Thank you 2019🙏

Last year has been ebbs and flows of excitement & disappointment; hardship & success; experience vs missed opportunities; memories made and missing out; it has been both rewarding & yet, there have been moments that have taken the wind out of my sails
I am a grateful for all of these alike. I am grateful for being told I am not ready and even the alternative, that I am too ambitious. I am grateful for the doors that closed & even more, for the ones that opened & the ones I opened
I am grateful for the criticism, judgement and praise alike. The late nights and early mornings. The family who will always come first. The friends, who enrich my fondest memories and who I may not see often enough, but whom I hold close to heart daily! For the blissful joy & challenges of being in a loving relationship and allowing myself to be loved in all my states & imperfections.
For growth, in all aspects. The hurdles and bruises that come with growing and learning more about myself. And the "Amen!" Or "Hell'yeah" that follows (whatever fits the outcome)
Anything worth having, is worth working for, fighting for, loving for and praying for. But the value comes from the process and appreciating the process towards creating a life one loves

All of the above has readied me & made me who I am going into 2020! Thank you again 2019.

⭕Tape Game

As an Athletic Therapist, I often use different kinds of tape in both my field and clinical settings.

⭕When do I use KT/Kinesio/K-tape?

When there is acute inflammation (a new injury or within 48 hours following an injury); after a fascial, cupping or blading treatment (which can result in a temporary inflammatory response due to specific techniques used); or as a proprioceptive support/cue during or following rehabilitation exercises (Proprioception training being the position of and/or movement of the body in space)

⭕ How does it work?

Correct application is necessary for it to be affective. The area has to be residue & oil free (clean area with soap and water and maks sure it is completely dry). Preferably hair free, for smoother application and for it to stay in place longer. As per @, "KT tape lifts the skin, decompressing the layers of fascia, allowing for greater movement of lymphatic fluid which transports white blood cells throughout the body and removes waste products, cellular debris, and bacteria." Thus, in an inflammatory stage & throughout stages of healing, it helps with reducing swelling.

⭕KT Tape goes by many names:

Elastic therapeutic tape, kinesiology tape, kinesio tape, k-tape or KT. As per , "It is an elastic cotton strip with an acrylic adhesive that is used with the intent of treating pain and disability from athletic injuries and a variety of other physical disorders."

My Father

He would have been 68 years young today! In his memory, and in wishing I could always just hug him one more time, Happy Birthday big guy!

Thank you for teaching me the pride in hard work & achieving what you set your mind to! To be resilient in the face of hardship. To remain ambitious even when I myself or people around you loose faith in who I am. To be grateful for the tough days & the good ones alike!

Dad, thank you for all the hard work, sacrifices and love. Because of you and Mum, I am...

2015 Pan Am & Para Pan Am Games

Being a medical volunteer was phenomenal!

Highlights included working with and learning from some amazing therapists, sports docs and of course the opportunity to witness some phenomenal athletes train and compete such as Canada's Andre De Grasse & Derek Drouin; Brazil's Paralympic athlete Terezinha Guilhermina, a legally blind sprinter; and Priscilla Frederick whose a US-born athlete but competed internationally for Antigua and Barbuda during the 2015 Pan Ams winning a silver medal in high jump! I worked with Priscilla the day she competed to help "prepare her legs", in her words. It wasn't until we crossed paths again the next day and she lifted her medal and pointed to me saying "Thank you!" that the fan girl excitement soared and I felt proud of being a therapist & a medical volunteer.

However small or large you may or may not believe you've contributed to someone's life, someone's experience, someone's success, when you do what you love: it comes through.

Let your work speak for itself!
