Meet Phyllis ๐งก
Celebrating the extraordinary life journey of Phyllis, one of our longest-standing clients. ๐ฑ๐ฉโโ๏ธ๐ป Phyllis's story takes root in Canada, where she was born, before being transplanted to the UK at the tender age of two. Her mother, a devoted teacher, planted in Phyllis a deep love for the natural world which blossoms to this day, as she tends to her cherished garden.
She has witnessed history unfold, experiencing the profound impact of the Second World War. Amidst the challenges of the era, her mother's strong conviction in the power of education propelled Phyllis to the university, a decision that set her on an unconventional path for a woman at the time - the path of medicine.
Defying norms and breaking barriers, Phyllis championed her way into the medical field, bringing her dedication and compassion to her work as a pediatrician. This choice was influenced by her immense love for children, a love that extended beyond her profession.
Unable to have children of her own, Phyllis and her beloved husband, who she met during her medical studies, embraced parenthood by adopting three children, filling their home with love and laughter.
Phyllis's energy wasn't just confined to her practice or her garden. An avid athlete, she has a collection of medals for high jump to her name. Her vibrant spirit also resonated through music as she played the violin and piano, adding a melodic rhythm to her life.
Phyllis's life story is a vivid tapestry of resilience, love, accomplishment, and enduring passion. She is a testament to the idea that we are capable of writing our own stories, breaking barriers, and cultivating beauty - both in gardens and in lives.

#DementiaAwarenessWeek
At Sylvian Care, we understand the importance of sensory stimulation for those living with dementia. Sensory activities play a vital role in maintaining cognitive function, emotional wellbeing, and overall quality of life for dementia sufferers. ๐ง โจ
Engaging the senses can help to trigger memories, reduce anxiety, and encourage communication for those affected by dementia. From simple activities like listening to music or stroking a soft blanket, to more complex tasks like gardening or baking, sensory stimulation can make a world of difference. ๐ถ๐ฟ
As dedicated home care professionals, we at Sylvian Care continuously strive to incorporate sensory stimulation into our personalised care plans. This relationship-centric approach ensures that our clients with dementia feel supported, understood, and valued. ๐งก

A Timeless Love Story: June and Derrick's Extraordinary Journey
As part of our โWhen I was youngโ campaign, today we celebrate the incredible life that our one of our clients had led.
Once upon a time, in the year 1947, two young souls met at the university, creating a story that would span continents and last a lifetime. June and Derrick's extraordinary journey began with a shared love for dancing, and little did they know, their lives would become intertwined forever.
At the university, Derrick was studying agriculture, while June pursued her own academic interests. One fateful day, their paths crossed, and they danced together to "In the Mood" by Glenn Miller. This moment marked the beginning of their unbreakable bond, as the song became a symbol of their love and the soundtrack to their lives.
As Derrick's studies progressed, his career took him overseas, first to Trinidad and later to Mufindi, Tanganika (now Tanzania) to manage a tea plantation. Despite the distance, June and Derrick's love only grew stronger. They maintained their connection through heartfelt letters, allowing their love to blossom over the years. In 1952, June embarked on a journey across the sea to Mombasa, where she married Derrick in a beautiful ceremony.
Together, they formed a powerful partnership. Derrick worked his way up the ranks, eventually becoming the CEO of a tea company in Tanzania, while June dedicated her time and energy to looking after the workforce. Their mutual support and commitment were the foundation of their success.
In recognition of his incredible work with the local people, Derrick was bestowed with the honor of becoming a chief of the tribe, presented with a ceremonial spear and carved elephant tusks. Later in 1984, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.
Throughout their 67-year marriage, June and Derrick enjoyed a love that transcended time and distance. They eventually settled in a nice retirement court w

Are you feeling sad or low? Try these simple steps by Neeta Jain, M.D. of https://www.sutterhealth.org/ to improve your mood and rejuvenate your body.
- **Eat healthily** and get some exercise no matter whatโeven during vacations, holiday seasons and stressful times. A simple exercise like walking, even just 30 minutes a day, helps reduce stress.
- **Get Plenty of Sleep.** You might not make rest time a priority. But not getting enough sleep can lead to a slowed metabolism and increased appetiteโputting you at risk for unhealthy food choices and inactivity.
- **Care for Emotional and Spiritual Health.** Dig into the feelings that may be behind your depressed stateโguilt, trauma, anxiety. Open up to a counselor or trusted friend.
- **Expand Your Joy.** Think about what makes you happy and lifts you up, and then spend more time doing it. Enjoy relaxing activities such as reading, painting, gardening or whatever you love.
- **Minimise Stress and Practice Mindfulness.** Learn how to meditate or take a mindfulness meditation class.
Allow yourself to be pampered and utilize the weekends as your rest day to refocus! Please speak to someone if you're struggling, don't fight alone! A problem shared is a problem halved after all.
So what activities will you launch this year to promote good mental health at work and at home? **leave a comment below.**

Houseplants are great companions and a wonderful addition to any home, bringing nature right where we are. More than the aroma they bring to any home, they're also therapeutic to have.
The elderlies especially love them! However, in the winter, they cannot do any gardening because of the cold.
What are your favourite houseplants? Talk to your elderlies about it and you'll surely have a great conversation with them!
