HOLIDAY HEALTH

A few tips to help keep you on the go over the holidays.

What do a pen, a serving spoon and a fire truck have in common?

The Christmas Holiday is a time of sharing and togetherness which involves much shopping, eating and revelry. It is also a time of stress and seasonal colds. Unfortunately, many people still practice a courteous but contagious for of hygiene; sneezing and coughing in their hands which transfers the cooties to everything they touch such as pens and credit cards key pads, serving utensils at parties and family gatherings and particularly toys, being the most popular gifts of the season.

To reduce the chance of picking up what other have left behind, keep a pen handy for signing at retail counters and banks etc. and avoid touching your face, eyes nose and mouth when shopping or at gatherings. As well, keep some hand sanitizer handy and wash your hands regularly especially after handling items at buffets or even after your gym workout.

A good supplement to have in your corner is Deep Immune by St Francis, an effective immune booster that stops colds and flu like symptoms at the first sign of a sniffle or muscle ache.

And, remember, if you have to cough or sneeze, IN THE SLEEVE PLEASE!

Stay tuned for the launch of our Health Enhancement and Weight Management offers to kick off the New Year.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY 2014

IF – Preventive Health News Letter #2 – MAY13

Welcome back to the IF Preventive Health Newsletter.

As a continuation the general understanding of health presented in April’s issue, this edition will discuss your personalized Preventive Health Plan (PHP), the essential first step on the road to optimal health. Lets start by looking at the importance of prevention.

We have all heard the cliché time and again, “an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure” “an apple (or two) a day will (certainly) keep the doctor away”. Well, I’m not too sure about the apples these days given the advances in genetic manipulation, fertilization and insecticide use etc but more on this in a later issue on nutrition. But back to the prevention vs. cure adage, many people make the mistake of thinking that the absence of any health related sign or symptom requiring medical advice or attention is an indication of good health and many have fallen victim to this false sense of wellbeing. We know that regular check-ups and screening exams such as the daunting “p.s.a” for men and the uncomfortable mammogram or “pap-smear” for women, are essential in detecting and treating malignant disorders. However, controversy on the effectiveness of screening tests grows as yesterday’s truths are today’s taboos and today’s breakthrough are only good until the next scientific discouvery. Every now and then we are puzzled by the news of someone who lived an ultra healthy life but succumbed to some illness at age 40 while a pack a day smoker lives problem free - if you can endure the hacking and the odour - well beyond what is expected of a self abusive lifestyle. Still, despite the absence of guarantees, anecdotal reports, epidemiological studies and scientific evidence all support many preventive health practices that have stood the test of time.

As pointed out earlier, often our sense of wellbeing causes us to ignore our health. We feel great until one day………… The key is to not fall victim to your subjective feelings of wellbeing. Regular medical checkups provide objective information that can support your subjective feelings or warn of potential dangers. But, if the best preventive practice offers no guarantee, not everyone suffers from self-abuse and we are all destined to reunite with nature at some point then why bother? Ah, remember, it’s not the destination but the journey that counts. By improving your odds for optimal health, you will not only be enjoying a more fulfilling life but also helping to keep the cost of health-care in check. Since our life expectancy is on an upward trend, it is definitely in your interest to keep your health in the best possible state to be able to enjoy the golden years with the least amount of discomfort.

Your personal preventive health plan should be geared toward three things: prevention (you gotta be kidding), detection and maintenance or health optimization. We first want to keep the bugs at bay, but if by some misfortune of genetics or emotional disposition we succumb to a medical misfortune, early detection is the next crucial objective. And whatever our health condition, we certainly don’t want it to get any worse, so if a cure is not possible, maintaining the status quo is the next obvious (I assume) interest. Our final goal is then to maintain or improve our health status hopefully to the highest level possible i.e. Optimal Health. Keep in mind that we are all different so “optimal” will be different for each person. Of course, there are those of us who are content with just being alive. However, you never know how much better you can feel until you actually experience it. So just as you diligently report to the dentist for your cleaning every three months, service your vehicle at predetermined intervals and do a regular spring or fall home maintenance to improve the chances of trouble free function, why not put YOU on a similar preventive programme to improve YOUR odds of worry free performance.

So where do we start? The best start to a PHP is to take an initial health status inventory. This will establish your health baseline from where changes can be measured. Remember, if it can’t be measured then you’re really just going on how you feel. Nonetheless, your feelings are as important as any other indicator because at the end of the day that is what really matters, to rise each morning with a zest for living and looking forward to all that the day has to offer with full control of your mind and body?

Your health status baselines are for example; basic indices (weight, height, blood pressure, body fat and H2O %), your fitness level (strength, flexibility and cardiovascular potential), lab indices (glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides) and general age related screenings such as colonoscopy and prostate exams. Advances in lab screening like Homocysteine and C-Reactive Proteine (CRP) can now alert someone of their probability for maladies such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and osteoporosis. MRIs provide a wealth of information about your musculo-skeletal and organ systems but are currently cost prohibitive. X-rays and Bone scans are also useful and less costly but associated with radiation risk. (It is estimated that the radiation from one regular x-ray is equivalent to what you get from a trans-Atlantic flight). ES-Teck (*1) is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive computer based, full body health scan which offers a wealth of information on tissue state, body chemistry and organ function at a fraction of the cost and takes only 15 minutes. From the above screening tests - which can be ordered by your family physician or alternative healthcare provider, a wealth of health and health risk information can be gleaned to determining where your preventive health focus should be. The choice of inventory method is a risk vs. benefit decision that your doctor can help you make.

As presented in the last issue, health is a state of balance or homeostasis of the physical, biological and emotional body taking into account the impact of external influences on the three components. Of these external influences, diet, exercise and lifestyle play key roles in your PHP. But before any changes, it is always advised to discuss your objective results with your healthcare provider. For example embarking on a fitness programme when you have an anemic predisposition could work against you much like pushing your car up a hill…… alone. You would end up being discouraged and maybe throw in the towel without ever knowing why exercise didn’t seem to work for you. Other concerns such as heart conditions, diabetes, and arthritis all influence how you should approach your exercise, diet and lifestyle changes. So, while, the health status inventory is necessary, proper medical supervision is vital to your success.

In the next issue I will present the components of a PHP, Cleansing, Alkalizing, “RnR” and Exercise under the acronym CARE. Until then,

Safe and healthy flying.

Hello again.

Our first presentation, May 16th, on REDOX signaling molecules was well received, all seats taken and a few standing.

Wednesday Jun 20th, the clinic will be presenting Fork Over Knives an eye-opener on the connection between nutrition and leading illnesses.

This compelling documentary is based on medical studies dating as far back as the 1950’s and the China Study, an epidemiological goldmine commissioned by a late Emperor.

You will learn about clinically verified relationships, which have been suppressed, resulting in the dietary choices we make today causing us to unwittingly bring about our own health demise.

Sanjay Gupta MD and CNN's chief medical correspondent called it "a great film".
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, reviewed the film positively: "Here is a film that could save your life.
