This camp is for the outdoor kid that is ready to learn skills needed to survive in the wilderness. The truth is that no one goes out intending to get hurt, or lost, and yet both happen. Throughout the week, we will address preparedness (which includes parents knowing where you are!), the mental toughness to remain calm, the rule of 3’s and some important winter safety considerations. As we dive deeper, the children will be practicing fire lighting, building shelters and practicing signalling. Throughout the week they will either make or receive items that we recommend they have in their “survival kit” moving forward.

This camp is lead by Lead Mentor, Keely Hall (along with other members of our team). In addition to having a strong background in wilderness skills, Keely is a member of our local search and rescue team. This experience gives her further insights into behaviours of people when they are lost and statistical data which has shaped the focuses of this camp.

From Britannica.com: deposit of ice crystals on objects exposed to the free air, such as grass blades, tree branches, or leaves. It is formed by direct condensation of water vapour to ice at temperatures below freezing and occurs when air is brought to its frost point by cooling. Hoarfrost is formed by a process analogous to that by which dew is formed on similar objects, except that, in the case of dew, the saturation point of the air mass is above freezing.

Hoarfrost is common in our area and it gave lots of conversation when one side of trees had it but not the other. Do you know why this is?

We have been quiet on here. The winter season is like that. A little quieter, slower and more comfy.

Next week is approaching fast though and we are excited to meet some new families as we start off the winter semester.

We might know a little about this 😉

Nature’s Edge families, mark your calendars! You do not want to miss Crimson Lake Winterfest this year.

Winterfest is on Valentine's Day this year so that means some extra special fun for you lovebirds that do the polar bear dip together. Couples that jump together get entered into a special couple's prize package. For every $200 that you raise as a team you'll get another entry in the draw. Prize package details to follow.

Another parent testimony:

“My favourite thing from fall semester was the energy you guys came home with. Or lack there of!”

We love the honest feedback!

One thing that nature always provides is variety! This lends itself well to challenge by choice and allowing learners to have greater or lesser challenge.

Captured here is a challenge in listening, decision making, body control and physics. But the hill adds an even greater challenge with gravity as an added force. It was an added layer of challenge some of our learners were seeking that day!

Do you look for greater or lesser challenges?
