We are still in winter here in west central Alberta. But, that doesn’t mean we aren’t dreaming of spring thaw and spring semester with forest school. We may even be taking that dreaming a little further into summer 😁

Is summer camp on your must do list this year? Dates have been announced and registration is open on the website!

Why not take a little rest while shelter building? Have you slept on spruce bows before?

MISSING - and GREATLY missed!

Our bum pads are an integral part of the safety of our program; protecting learners from the cold, often wet ground.

They were in the green bag shown below. They have the Outdoor Learning logo on one side and bare on the underside.

Please share to help us find these quicker! *Reward offered if they are returned in working order*

Please meet Chantelle!

“My two greatest passions are working with children and connecting with nature.

I have enjoyed over 20 years of experience in early childhood care and education and have always felt most at home in an outdoor setting. The natural world offers so many rich, meaningful learning opportunities that can’t be replicated in the classroom. I find it magical to witness the kinship that forms between children and their surroundings, whether they’re curious about where a line of ants is headed, or what type of animal left a bite mark on a wild mushroom. These authentic, inquiry-based experiences leave lasting impressions that can cultivate a lifelong love for discovery and learning.

Being outdoors is rejuvenating to me. Whether I’m hiking, camping, or just walking through the trees, I find nature brings me a sense of peaceful happiness.

Combining my passions in a forest school setting has been a career-long goal of mine and I am thrilled to be a part of the dedicated Nature’s Edge team.”

Often at forest school we take a minute to test sense of direction. Everyone closes their eyes and points in the direction we are asking about. Sometimes our forest friends are accurate, sometimes they’re pointing at the bluebird sky above 😆

This camp is for the outdoor kid that is ready to learn skills needed to survive in the wilderness. The truth is that no one goes out intending to get hurt, or lost, and yet both happen. Throughout the week, we will address preparedness (which includes parents knowing where you are!), the mental toughness to remain calm, the rule of 3’s and some important winter safety considerations. As we dive deeper, the children will be practicing fire lighting, building shelters and practicing signalling. Throughout the week they will either make or receive items that we recommend they have in their “survival kit” moving forward.

This camp is lead by Lead Mentor, Keely Hall (along with other members of our team). In addition to having a strong background in wilderness skills, Keely is a member of our local search and rescue team. This experience gives her further insights into behaviours of people when they are lost and statistical data which has shaped the focuses of this camp.
