Happy International Women’s Day! Here’s 5 reasons periods are WORSE if you’re autistic:
1. Management…ya know, pads, tampons, special underwear can literally be UNBEARABLE.
I have worked with girls who’ve ripped pads out of their underwear in public because they hit the limit on what they can tolerate.
When you have heightened sensitivity, no matter which sanitary product you use, you’re always acutely aware of how it feels at every moment.
2. Internal cues are supposed to tell you what you need and how to fix it but if you’re autistic, you may be missing one or both of those abilities. When to change? When to shower? When to get medicine? You may find out when it’s too late.
3. The same hormone fluctuations that cause Neurotypical people to cry more easily or crave chocolate, can cause an autistic person to have an emotional or behavioral crisis.
4. Increased sensory issues. That sound was bothering you. Those lights were too bright, and that smell you couldn’t stand is now way worse. See number 3 for what happens next.
5. While 3-9% of people who menstruate experience PMDD…which is like PMS but genuinely debilitating…up to 92% of autistic people deal with it.
Knowing why periods are harder for autistic people won’t fix everything, but it’s the first step toward making them more manageable.
