FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- May 6, 2026

Commitment to Preserving the Legacy of Lonicera Hall

The organizations of Home Support Services Inc. and the Maria F. Ganong Seniors Residence Inc. (Lonicera Hall) in consultation with key stakeholders wish to confirm their ongoing commitment to working constructively to support the continued preservation and stewardship of this important community asset.

Our shared goal is to maintain Lonicera Hall in a manner that faithfully honours the vision and intent of Maria F. Ganong, whose legacy remains central to the purpose and future of the Hall. These efforts are being undertaken with care, respect, and a long‑term perspective to ensure that the Hall continues to serve the community in a meaningful and sustainable way.

At this stage, we are determining options. All discussions remain ongoing and are pending further input, review, and collaboration with legal counsel, the Department of Social Development, and other relevant stakeholders. This process is deliberate and thoughtful, reflecting the importance of getting it right for the benefit of the community.

Given the sensitive and complex nature of these discussions, it is neither reasonable nor appropriate to conduct them in the public sphere. Productive dialogue requires a respectful environment grounded in collaboration, trust, and a shared commitment to positive outcomes.

“It behooves all of us to make our communities more accessible.” – Laura MacFarlane, executive director of Home Support Services Inc. in Charlotte County.

Laura’s Dream: Togetherness through accessibility

When Laura MacFarlane watches people navigate the hallways of the Home Support Services Inc. building in St. Stephen, she realizes how much change is needed.

“It’s a very, very old building,” says Laura, the organization’s executive director. “It’s a really awkward building.”

Because the not-for-profit agency offers services for people who use mobility devices or are older, Laura took advantage of an Accessible NB review to see what could be done to help make the building more manageable for people.

“There’s not a day that I don’t recognize that there are some difficulties when it comes to our clients' use of our building, which bothers me no end.”

Home Support Services Inc. runs three programs in Charlotte County: home care, Meals on Wheels and a foot care clinic. Many seniors and people living with disabilities enter the building every day, whether meeting with staff to arrange services or to receive footcare in the clinic.

“Those are the daily areas we need to improve on,” says Laura.

Accessible NB is a free service that helps foster more accessible environments. The reviews provide specific recommendations for new design, modifications or adaptations to improve accessibility.

Based on the results of the review, Home Support Services Inc. has removed clutter to open up space and plans to improve its signage.

Some of the larger structural changes that were recommended will require time and budget planning. Laura says the report has also identified how to prioritize accessibility if the organization decides to look for new space.

In the long term, Laura wants to offer more communal programming, including meals, to break down the isolation many clients experience.

“And we can’t do that right now because those clients have very significant mobility issues,” she says. “My vision or my dream for the organization is to be more inclusive, and I want to have more of a community presence for our clients so we can be a hub.”

Laura also hopes to be an example for others.

“We all should be considering accessibility,” she says.

“It behooves all of us to make our communities more accessible. That’s a collective responsibility, in our opinion.”

________

🌷 May is Legacy Month in Canada 🌷

At Home Support Services Inc., we are honoured to support seniors, families, and caregivers each day with compassion and dignity.

Legacy Month is a time to reflect on the values that matter most — care, kindness, and community — and how those values can live on.
By including Home Support Services Inc. in a will or estate plan, a legacy gift helps ensure nonprofit home support and compassionate care remain available for future generations.

💙 We are sincerely grateful to those who have already chosen to leave a legacy with us. Your generosity is already shaping the future of care in our community.

A legacy is not defined by size, but by intention — and every act of care makes a difference.

We are so pleased to support our friends at St. Croix Vocational Centre Inc. and purchased Tim Hortons Smile Cookies to be delivered to our Meals on Wheels clients today. Of course we made sure to have extras for two of our favourite volunteer drivers, Bill Murchie and Larry Doherty! Our volunteers deserve ALL the cookies and we are always appreciative of Bill, Larry and all of our wonderful volunteers who are the heart of our community.

A big thank you to the lovely human in the black car in the drive through lane at the St. Stephen Tim Hortons who paid for a box of smile cookies for the car behind them. That car was driven by our wonderful PSW Carla Cleghorn who stopped in to the Home Support Services office to share! We are very appreciative of both the unexpected treat and the donation to the St. Croix Vocational Centre Inc..

We are reaching out to invite members of the Charlotte County community to take part in a workshop on the future of aging at home and in the community.

This workshop is part of a broader, cross‑organizational project led by Medavie’s Design and Innovation team, in partnership with the Extra Mural Program, Horizon Health, Social Development, the Charlotte County Resource Centre, and other community partners. Together, we are exploring how care can better support older adults in aging well at home and in their community.

We strongly believe that local voices, lived experience, and community knowledge are essential to shaping meaningful and practical solutions. This workshop is an opportunity for community members to share ideas, experiences, and perspectives to inform how health, home, community, and social care services work together in Charlotte County

Who is invited
We welcome participation from:

Older adults
Family members and caregivers
Health care and social service providers
Community organizations and volunteers
Local government and community leaders
No special preparation or expertise is required — just a willingness to share your perspective.

What to expect
The workshop will be hosted in an open‑house format, designed to be informal and welcoming:

Drop in anytime during the session
Plan to spend approximately 60–90 minutes
Participate in conversations and simple activities
Share what’s working, what’s challenging, and what could be different
This is not a presentation or lecture, but a chance to be heard and contribute to future directions.

The question we’re exploring
How might we reimagine care experiences in Charlotte County that connect primary, home, community, and social care so older adults age well in their community, and providers feel like one team?

Why this matters:
Insights gathered through this workshop will help:

Identify strengths, gaps, and opportunities in current care experiences
Ensure local perspectives inform future models of care
Support more connected, community‑centred approaches across organizations
