💠Staff Profile💠 Boozhoo!! Kitaay Bizhikikwe ndizhinikaaz, waabizheshi ndodem. Anishinaabe, miinwaa Métis ndow, bezho Mide kwe ndow. My name is Kitaay Bizhikikwe, I also use my English name, Amanda Myers. I am marten clan, and a member of the Three Fires Midewiwin Confederacy. I am a lucky Mom to an 11-teen year old, and I am fortunate to have arrived in Salt Spring two years ago to take on the role of Executive Director with GIFTS. My favorite flower is the Mandevilla vine. Miigwetch! 🌸🌿

💠 Staff Profile 💠 Meet Verena! One of our support workers and admin assistants. She really loves being a part of GIFTS and The Diverse Village and she is excited for what the future holds for both organizations. You’ll often find her with a smile on her face (now with adult braces!). Outside of work Verena enjoys acrylic painting, inventing new recipes, spending time with friends, exploring nature and doing henna. 🫧🌻🫧

A celebration that takes place internationally in July every year since 1990 (the first one in Boston). Disability Pride aims to encourage curiosity and advocacy for human rights and inclusion. Some disabilities are visible while others are not - everyone deserves to be recognized and supported. Do you have anyone in your life that might be put together a bit differently? What could you do help them celebrate this month? 🦋

🍁 June 27th was Canadian Multiculturalism Day! In Canada we have a big range of unique cultures, some we may not be aware of. GIFTS would like to highlight June 16th as the beginning of 📚Learning Disability Week📚. The theme this year is "Do you see me?" which is all about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued. Starting on Monday, are there ways you can express how proud you are of others who have a unique way of learning? Tip: patience is key to successful support! 😊

June is designated as National Indigenous History Month and GIFTS would like to acknowledge this important time. NIHM is an opportunity for us all to gain more insight into the many traditions, unique cultures, and experiences of Indigenous peoples. We honour and celebrate their vast contributions and abundant heritage. June provides us with the opportunity to recognize both historic and present day Indigenous communities, fostering a great understanding and appreciation of their invaluable impact. This month also aims to accentuate the importance of preserving Indigenous cultural practices, languages, and arts to ensure that future generations have the opportunities to continue to learn from their heritage. There are many ways we can gain deeper understanding, especially through their own voices. Here are a few ways we can learn: reading books by Indigenous authors, attending cultural events, listening to music by Indigenous artists and supporting businesses.

Being present for others is such an important part of support and makes a big difference ❤️ Of course there is space for advice as well, however, ask people “How can I support you right now?” Sometimes it’s listening and your presence vs giving advice immediately because we want to help them.
