Healthcare facilities that manage patients with dementia have reported success in reducing confusion and agitation when using baby dolls or toy dogs and cats. Despite ample anecdotal evidence to support the value of tactile nonpharmacologic interventions, acute-care researchers had not previously explored the feasibility of conducting formal studies to understand the efficacy of baby doll therapy (BDT).

A team of Cleveland Clinic nurse investigators addressed this knowledge gap with a pilot study aimed at evaluating the viability of further BDT research. Led by assistant nurse managers Ashley Hall, MSN, RN, and Elizabeth Cai, MSN, RN, CMSRN, the research team not only found BDT worthy of future study, but also confirmed that the therapy itself may provide benefit to patients with dementia.

Hall explains that the feasibility of future research on BDT hinged on answers to several key questions, including whether the dolls would be well received by both male and female patients and their families. “The answer to our primary question was overwhelmingly yes!” she says. “Almost without exception, patients received the dolls with open arms. It was actually quite astonishing to watch how they interacted with their ‘babies.’”

“Both caregivers and family members expressed witnessing notable changes in patient demeanor, and we were amazed by the positive feedback we received.”

While more research is needed, ultimately the pilot study demonstrates that BDT appears to be associated with a reduction in agitation behaviours. Definitely an interesting non-pharmacologic intervention to keep a close eye on!

Pilot study confirms feasibility of conducting additional research on the novel treatment

As part of Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize, and know how to mitigate, the risk of caregiver burnout. Here are some great tips from
・・・
Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion that happens while you’re taking care of someone else. Stressed caregivers may experience fatigue, anxiety and depression. You can reduce your risk of burnout by participating in respite care, joining a support group or talking with a mental health professional.

Here are some steps you can take to prevent caregiver burnout:

▪️Find someone you trust. It helps to talk about your feelings and frustrations with someone else, whether it be a friend, family member, mental health professional or social worker.

▪️Set realistic goals. It’s important to accept that you may need assistance with caregiving, especially if you’re trying to balance other responsibilities with work and family. If your workload gets overwhelming, reach out for help.

▪️Learn more. You may feel more comfortable providing care when you have the knowledge and understanding of the illness or condition that affects the person you’re caring for. Be realistic about your loved one’s condition, especially if it’s a progressive disease like Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Acknowledge that there may come a time when they require nursing services or assisted living outside the family home.

▪️Take care of yourself. While you’re taking care of someone else, make sure your needs are met first. Set aside time for yourself, even if it’s just an hour or two. Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury. It’s an absolute necessity for caregivers.

▪️Eat well. It’s easy to forget to eat three complete meals each day when you’re providing for someone else. Eating healthy foods keeps your energy up so you perform at your best.

▪️Accept your feelings. Having negative feelings — like frustration or anger about your responsibilities or the person you care for — is normal. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or a bad caregiver. If your feelings are overwhelming, reach out for help

Hi there! It’s , host of Scotiabank Wednesday Night Hockey on . Today we’re talking about the importance of brain health.

As I get older, this is something I continue to give more thought to, not just because of my late grandma’s experience with dementia, or because of my career in sports, but because I really believe in the value of a healthy brain for my health today, and in the future.

Keeping your brain healthy is about making healthy habits. From wearing a helmet when you ski, to finding a quiet place to destress when you are overstimulated, each practice does its part. Over time, these small acts add up to make a big difference.

How do you take care of your brain health? Let us know in the comments!

If you’d like to learn more, there are plenty of brain-healthy tips on our website. Check out the link in bio.

Breaking Alzheimer’s research alert 🚨
・・・
A research team led by Cleveland Clinic and Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) investigators has developed a new method for mapping the electrical paths that connect and coordinate various parts of the brain to complete behavioral and cognitive tasks. The findings promise insights critical to understanding behavior changes in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurological disorders.

“Effects on behavior and personality in Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders are caused by changes in brain function,” says Hod Dana, PhD, of the Department of Neurosciences in Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute, who is collaborating on the work with OHSU behavioral neuroscientist Jacob Raber, PhD. “If we can understand exactly how the changes occur, we may determine how to slow the process or stop it. Recording brain activity patterns that underlie behavioral changes is the first step to bridging the gap.”

Whew! We made it through another busy holiday season and it’s absolutely normal if it’s taking some time to get back into the swing of things. We’ve all been out of our routines for weeks, and overwhelm and anxiety about all you have in your plate is completely understandable. Here are a few gentle somatic practices that may help.

・・・

💚Physiological sigh with soothing touch.
Place one hand on your chest and one hand on your belly. Breath deep into your belly and sigh out loud as you exhale.

💚Shake out the body.
Stand with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bend. Bounce on your feet and shake your hands and arms.

💚Massage the back and sides of your neck.
Gently massage down the back and sides of your neck (where the vagus nerve comes down from the brain stem)

💚Cold Water.
Having a brief cold shower, ice bath, or splashing cold water on your face.

💚Heel Drops.
Come up on the toes and drop down on the heels. Focus on the sensations and vibrations it creates.

Let us know what practices work best for you!
