💥FEMALE FRIDAY Joy Chiekwel💥
I am a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP), a High Performance Coach (HPC) and am currently doing my masters in exercise oncology. As a CEP I prescribe exercise as a form of medicine to clinical populations. Currently, I work mostly with cancer patients/survivors with Nova Scotia Health but also consult with health care practitioners on ways to add exercise into their patients lives. My work with NSH includes cancer exercise/research programs where we look at the effects of physical activity and exercise on different areas of quality of life and physiology.
During my undergrad at Acadia, I was lucky to be a strength and conditioning student coach with the football and basketball teams. During this time you really had to learn how to make your voice heard over men that towered over you. I believe this helped me find my way as a female in the sport/fitness industry. Since there are not many females in the strength and conditioning industry, especially in male dominated sports, you can easily be overlooked or devalued. I honestly have to give thanks to my head coaches and other male coaches who provided me with a safe space, made sure my thoughts were heard and knew I brought value to the team.
My advice to young females coming up in this industry it to come in prepared. Do the work before hand and maybe a little extra! Lead by example and always be open to trying new techniques. There is always so much to learn, so adopting a student mind-set will get you far!
