With the sun shining later in the day and spring right around the corner, often people think this time of year can be really uplifting.
Unfortunately, many people struggle silently during this time of year. Statistically, it’s often the months of the highest su***de rates.
A conversation I’ve had multiple times recently with amazing people doing amazing things in different communities is how now, more than ever before, the unlikely, average person is struggling way more than those on the outside looking in have any clue about.
When you want the world to be a better place, it can seem a bit challenging to decide where to focus the energy to help. Although I’m not able to solve all the problems in the world (yet), today I decided to focus on one that is close to my heart.
I’ve decide to join forces with some colleagues to participate in an 8 KM run this coming weekend. We have been working together to raise money for the Parkdale Community Food Bank. Parkdale feeds over 8000 families EVERY month. This number has significantly increased since the pandemic.
Often people assume the food banks are feeding the homeless; however, more and more it supports people in families, with dual income, multiple jobs, attempting to stay afloat. It’s people who have lost their job; some going through divorce; single parents attempting to make ends meet. It doesn’t matter what leads to what that brings someone to the place to simply get a meal to help get through the day. You never think it could happen to you, and you most definitely wouldn’t guess it could be happening to someone you actually know, suffering silently.
This weekend many people got together to feast with their families. Some people are fasting this month to honour other tradtions. It doesn’t matter your background, your belief systems, or your cultural traditions. As humans, we need to take care of each other. Everyone has their own form of struggle. Today, I invite you to participate in helping Parkdale Community Food Bank to continue feeding families who happen to be in need at this time.
