The holidays can bring joy for some, but for others, this season might stir feelings of sadness, loneliness, or overwhelm. If this time of year feels heavy for you, that’s okay. Your feelings are valid and they matter.

You don’t have to force yourself to be merry or meet every expectation of the season. It’s okay to grieve, to feel lonely, or to just not love the holidays. Take care of your heart in the ways that feel right; whether it’s slowing down, setting boundaries, reaching out for support, or simply allowing yourself to feel.

You’re not alone in this.

Everyone has unique strengths, yet society often judges us based on a narrow set of standards. For those with ADHD, ASD, and other neurodiverse traits, the world sometimes demands abilities that don’t align with their natural talents or ways of processing and communicating.

Einstein’s quote reminds us that true intelligence and potential come in many forms, and no one should be judged by a single measure of success. Just because a person with ADHD struggles to stay organized or someone with ASD processes social cues differently, it doesn’t mean they’re less capable or any less brilliant.

Embrace the ways in which you shine, and remember: your worth isn't defined by how well you can climb the tree; it’s about how you excel in your own way.

It’s true - healing truly requires courage, and it's important to recognize that we all possess this courage, even if it sometimes feels buried.

It’s completely normal to feel scared when confronting pain and facing the unknown, and there may be times when we doubt our strength. In counseling, we create a safe space to explore these fears and acknowledge that everyone experiences moments of uncertainty. By taking small steps, we can uncover our inner resilience, fostering growth and self-discovery along the way.

Remember, it’s okay to feel unsure; you’re not alone in this journey. The most courageous thing we can do is reach out for help and guidance.

Shame is the feeling that there is something wrong with us. Shame holds us in, holds us back. It is the voice that tells us we are being judged. That people will see us differently, blame us, view us with disgust or contempt.
It’s the voice that tells us we aren’t good enough. That we can’t. That we are unworthy.

If you are a Lord of the Rings Fan, you know the story of King Theoden. The evil wizard Saruman conspired with the king’s counsellor Grima Wormtongue to whisper ugliness to Theoden. A king who was strong and heroic became old and blind and feeble under Grima’s terrible whisperings. Gandalf the white wizard saved Theoden from Grima. He called out Grima’s lies and made his true intentions known. When the evil whispers were gone, Theoden returned to himself.

What would you be without the evil whispers of shame in your life? What could you be released from? What freedom would you have to be yourself?

“Shame dies when stories are told in safe places” - Ann Voskamp

Therapy can be a safe place for you to release the secrets that are holding you back; a place to speak the unspeakable and call out the lies of shame and take its power away.

When you think about your Identity, what comes to mind? Is it your job? Your role within your family or partnership? Is it linked to gender or sexuality? What about family history or struggles? Is it linked to your spiritual views? Is it grounded in your interests and friendships?

Sometimes, when something happens in our world, we experience a shift or destabilization of how we see ourselves. A traumatic event, a betrayal, a new diagnosis, all kinds of things might impact our sense of identity. For many folks, this shift can lead to a feeling of lostness. “I don’t know who I am anymore” is something that I might hear in a counselling session, and we grieve who we understood ourselves to be.

Hope lies in knowing that we are never in our final form. We are capable of infinite growth. We are soft, fluid, “a continually changing constellation of potentialities” over which we get some choice and control.

So if you are experiencing a shift in your life, if you are feeling lost, know that you will discover yourself again. If you need someone to walk alongside you on your path to rediscovery, feel free to reach out to us at Branches. We would be happy to join you.
