It’s Wellness Wednesday! Someone posted this the other day (sorry I don’t remember who!). It resonated so much with me. Especially now. Is your fear protecting you? Or is it preventing you from living your life? We absolutely have the choice to stop our fear from taking over. What we do every single day is what matters. Are we moving towards fear-based thoughts and information? Or are we moving towards positive and hopeful thoughts and actions? We can choose which path we want to walk down. It may be a long path for some or a short path for others. Regardless, the hope and positivity path is the path to better mental, physical, emotional and spiritual wellness. It’s not naive, it’s the wisest thing you can do for yourself 🤓

Employee Engagement is top priority for workplaces interested in psychologically well workers and their environments. Not to mention excellent for top margin growth!

Employee Engagement is defined as: A work environment where employees feel connected to their work and are motivated to do their job well.

Guarding Minds at Work (www.guardingmindsatwork.ca) informs us of the benefits of effectively addressing engagement:
1. enhanced performance & productivity
2. high employee morale & motivation
3. enhanced recruitment & increased retention of skilled candidates
4. improved customer & client relations

Here is some beneficial info workplaces can collect to help engage their employees:
-staff suggestions
-employee surveys on engagement
-exit interviews
-measures of productivity
-absenteeism rates & turnover rates

Many of these strategies engage the “quiet majority - the vast majority of workers; workers who go about their duties day to day in a responsible manner, doing what is expected from the organizations’ perspective but not what they are totally capable of delivering. These are the ones that ask “what’s in it for me?” and will work harder when they experience a greater reward for doing so.

Organizational change must be a company-wide decision; a collaborative process with all staff involved having a say in the process. According to Nesterkin, (Department of Management and Decision Sciences, Coastal Carolina University), when organizational change undermines employees’ freedoms, negative psychological reactance is likely to occur at some point in the change process.

I ponder how this plays into today’s workplace decisions to return to the office post-pandemic. In my conversations with friends and colleagues, I am hearing that several large companies are seeing about a 50/50 split when engaging employees in this question and quest. Some an even larger divide than that. About 50% (or more) folks are wanting to continue working from home, and about 50% (or less) are wanting to get back into the office. We will see how this all unfolds…

How tired are you these days? Feeling tired and fatigued is your body telling you it needs rest. True rest is not just sleep and down time, it is also taking rest in the mind and heart. Clearing out all that isn’t serving you…the “noise” of life like media, gossip, toxic relationships, mindless scrolling on socials, negative self-talk. Reset snd refresh with true REST for the body mind and soul - my favorite way to do this is in nature with no cell phone for a day ☀️🛶🌲

We are open for business and looking to support work places, schools and communities. Here at The Work Well Project, our goal is to educate, collaborate and support in making our workplaces, schools and communities more inclusive, diverse, compassionate and supportive to its members, students & staff. Research shows that 1 in 4 workers in Canada is affected by psychological health issues. These issues lead to absenteeism, and high rates of turnover and burnout at work or school. The more workers, staff and students feel they have mental health support, the greater their job or school attachment, the greater their involvement and positivity towards others and towards their own job or school performance. Contact us to learn more or to book an assessment of your workplace, school, or community needs!

More than ever, workplaces, schools and communities are seeing the need to understand mental health and trauma. By working to create trauma-informed spaces, we can better understand how to support people and also how to create spaces of inclusion and belonging. Beyond that we can lift people up to a place where they feel inspired and maybe even experience healing in these everyday spaces that they work, learn and live in. Creating trauma-informed and psychologically well workplaces, schools and communities will, without a doubt, help to change and improve the health and wellness of our employees, teachers, parents & children. The Work Well Project is a provincial initiative working to do this. They offer workshops, coaching and trainings in the area of Trauma-Sensitive Spaces and Psychological Health & Safety. Check out their website to learn more and contact them to book a consultation or assessment for your workplace or school.
