Thank you all for your patience while I take some time away for training from August 21–28. This is a chance for me to step back, learn, and grow so I can continue to show up fully for the people I work with. Your trust and support mean so much to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep learning. I look forward to bringing fresh insights back into the office and reconnecting with you after I return.

Stepping away for a little reset — practicing what I often remind others: rest is part of the work. I’ll be back on June 1st feeling recharged and ready to reconnect.

Until then, take care of yourselves — and remember, slowing down is also progress.

It was an honour to present at the TDSB MSA Conference and lead a workshop on the History of Islamic Psychology.

We explored how early thinkers from the Muslim world approached mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing—centuries before modern psychology took shape. It was powerful to see students reflect on how these timeless ideas still speak to today’s challenges around identity, balance, and emotional health.

I really enjoyed the engagement and curiosity in the room. Grateful for the opportunity to share this history and contribute to meaningful conversations about the mind, self, and healing.

Al-Ghazali on the Mind-Heart Connection

“The purification of the heart is the key to true well-being.” – Al-Ghazali

Al-Ghazali saw the qalb (heart) as more than just a physical organ—it is the center of thoughts, emotions, and spiritual well-being. He believed that our mental and emotional states are deeply connected to the state of our hearts.

The qalb shapes our thoughts and emotions, influencing how we experience the world.
Negative emotions like anger, envy, and resentment pollute the heart, leading to inner distress and anxiety.
Dhikr (remembrance of God) and self-reflection cleanse the heart, promoting clarity and peace.
True well-being comes from aligning the heart, intellect, and soul, creating balance between faith, emotion, and reason.
Al-Ghazali’s insights remind us that mental health is not just about managing thoughts—it is about purifying the heart and nurturing the soul. A sound heart leads to a sound mind.

How do you care for your heart—both emotionally and spiritually?

Self-care is selfish.
MYTH: "Self-care is selfish."
FACT: Self-care is necessary. You cannot pour from an empty cup.

Taking time to rest, set boundaries, and recharge allows you to show up better for others.

Try this today:

Take a deep breath and slow down
Set a boundary with social media
Prioritize sleep and nourishment
Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is essential.

"ADHD is not a disability; it's a different ability." Dr. Edward Hallowell encourages us to move beyond outdated labels and recognize the strengths that come with ADHD. While challenges exist, individuals with ADHD often bring creativity, innovation, and a unique way of thinking to the table. When given the right support, structure, and encouragement, they can thrive in ways that traditional systems often overlook. Instead of focusing on limitations, let's celebrate the diverse abilities that come with neurodiversity and create spaces where all minds can flourish.

Ibn Sina: The Father of Early Psychiatry

Long before modern psychology, Ibn Sina (Avicenna) explored the complexities of the human mind in The Canon of Medicine (1025). His work laid the foundation for understanding mental health, shaping many of the principles we use today.

He recognized:

The mind-body connection, understanding that physical and mental health are deeply linked.
Mental health conditions like depression and anxiety, long before they were formally classified.
The lasting effects of trauma and childhood experiences on emotional well-being.
Ibn Sina emphasized that mental distress was not just a spiritual issue but a medical one, requiring treatment, self-awareness, and care. His approach combined science, philosophy, and spirituality—offering a holistic view of healing that remains relevant today.

How do you see the connection between mind and body in your own life?

You can just ‘snap out’ of anxiety or depression.
MYTH: "Just be happy." "Stop overthinking." "Snap out of it."
FACT: Mental health conditions are not just "bad moods."

Telling someone to "snap out of it" is like telling someone with a broken leg to "just walk." It does not work that way.

Instead, offer:

Patience
Understanding
Encouragement to seek help
Healing takes time. Support makes a difference.
