Did you know that your mind needs to 'digest' your thoughts and experiences? This digestive process happens every night during our sleep, which is why a good night's sleep is so important. Undigested thoughts and experiences can accumulate as mental ama (toxins) and may lead to symptoms such as brain fog, confusion, irritability, insomnia, and depression. Unfortunately, in today's society, we are often overloaded with negative news, and many of us engage in endless scrolling on our phones, or watching hours of violent TV shows.

Consider the type of impressions you are taking in throughout the day and if you might be accumulating negative impressions through: your environment and surroundings, your electronics, relationships with others, and any significant life events. Having an awareness can help us to limit the negative impressions within our realm of control (e.g., limiting TV) and to substitute positive impressions where possible (e.g., taking a walk in the forest). Essentially we want to feed our brains a healthy 'diet' of positive impressions as much as possible. 😄

Scent can invoke strong memories and emotions. As a Registered Aromatherapist, I work one-on-one with clients to understand their scent preferences, any contraindications, and preferred methods of use. All of my products are custom made for each client. When using aromatherapy for mental health, it's important that the scent makes the client feel good 😄🌹

It has been understood that mental health can affect your gut health, but did you know the opposite is also true? In fact, the gut has been called the 'second brain' as it has the largest collection of nerve cells in the body, and plays a major role in sending signals to the mind. The gut contains 90% of our receptors for serotonin, which is the mood and sleep-regulating hormone, and these receptors are constantly in contact with our gut microbiome. An imbalance in the gut can directly impact serotonin levels and lead to mood disorders. If you want to support your mental health, then you also need to consider your gut health as they are directly related.

Ayurveda encourages practices like eating a constitution-specific diet, eating at certain times of the day, eating seasonal foods, and incorporating digestive herbs and spices.
