Grip strength has long been known to be an indicator of longevity. Weaker grip strength is associated with all-cause mortality and is a marker for overall muscle strength as we age.
BUT, as my son says, ‘Don’t let your grip strength limit lifting capacity’.
I know lifting heavier weights will test and build my grip strength. I also know that I can lift heavier than my grip strength will allow right now. While I work on improving my ability to hold heavier weights, I’ve chosen these lifting wrist straps. They’ve made a huge difference! I’m no longer gripping for dear life hoping the weight doesn’t slip and land on my feet. I’ve broken through where I thought my plateau was on some of my lifts.
I don’t believe there are any blanket statements that work for everyone, when it comes to our health (except that strength training is imperative for women over 40!😜).
For me, using straps is a tool, not a crutch. I’m still training my grip—but I’m not letting it hold back my progress. Women deserve to take up space, lift heavy, and adapt intelligently to where we’re at right now.
It’s not either/or. It’s strength and strategy. 💪
