Summer is upon us, and in Ayurveda, this is known as Pitta season, dominated by the fire element. We love the warmth, the long days, and all the fun, but it's important to remember that too much fire can lead to burnout!
So, how do we enjoy summer without getting overheated? Here are some tips! This isn't a list of "don'ts," but rather a guide to understanding what can contribute to internal heat, empowering you to find your perfect summer balance through regulation, moderation and cooling resources.
โ Intense work days or emotionally intense conversations
โ Red meat, BBQโd Foods, Spicy & Oily Foods
โ Jam packed schedules
โ Alcohol & Caffeine (yes, even if cold or Iced!)
โ Intense workouts, particularly in the heat of the day.
Some practices that support cooling the body:
โ
Sweet foods (fruits & grains), Bitter foods (leafy greens) & astringent foods (lentils, chickpeas, cauliflower, broccoli)
โ
Proper hydration! Add lemon or cucumber, or try coconut water
โ
Teas: Mint, hibiscus, chamomile, fennel, licorice, rose
โ
Loose clothes made from natural fabrics
โ
Coconut oil abhyanga (self massage)
And of course remember to put sunscreen on your ears! ๐
A lot of this may sound obvious or intuitive - and THAT is the beauty of ayurveda. Practice this awareness in all aspects of your life so that you can begin to ride in harmony with nature flow.
