NPHWC and Body Quest are teaming up to advocate for the implementation of an NP contract model in NL. This model aims to provide free primary healthcare through established clinics and support future NPs in opening their own clinics.

Trent McDonald and Travis Sheppard, both born and raised in Newfoundland and Labrador, are committed to shaping the province's healthcare for years to come. As a team, we have forwarded our collaboration request to the House of Assembly. This new approach has been adapted after a very long struggle for MCP billing and funding models that would eliminate out-of-pocket expenses for essential healthcare services. Our clinics are optimistic that this joint effort will lead to a partnership with the HOA and an investment in homegrown/long-term solutions.

We are fighting for free primary healthcare, protection of NP innovativeness, recognition, and a bright future for all current and future NPs in this province. The time to fund NP Primary Care services is now! This province cannot afford to wait any longer!

The provincial government is currently allocating $11 million annually for Teladoc, a virtual care service in Newfoundland and Labrador. The most recent report indicates that there have been 19,000 visits through Teladoc this year. Notably, this service does not offer in-person consultations.

Nurse Practitioners (NPs) are unable to bill through the provincial medical plan when working outside the health authority, which forces them to operate under a fee-for-service model. As a result, NPs who run their own clinics are required to charge patients directly for their services, which can be a barrier for some individuals seeking care.

There are NPs in our province who are already running successful clinics, these professionals are ready and willing to expand their services, but they need the government's support to do so.

We urge the government to re-consider providing the necessary resources to publicly fund and support NP-led clinics, which would enhance access to quality healthcare for residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Nurse Practitioners are eager to contribute to the healthcare system, but we need the government’s backing to make this possible.
