Let's talk about attachment styles and love languages! 🫶🫂🧠

Why do these two go hand in hand?

Our attachment styles often stems from what we grew up with. This could look like anything from a very consistent and secure home life to a very unpredictable or chaotic home life. When we understand what that attachment styles presents as (secure, anxious, avoidant, disorganized), we can also see how it connects to our forms of love languages.

Our love languages can be impacted from our attachment styles by trying to have our needs met based on what we want more of or did not have enough of growing up. Whether your love language is words of affirmation, physical tough, gift giving or acts of service, this may be based off of what your attachment style asks for.

It's been a wild few years of juggling all the work, moving offices, getting my intern hours completed, all the while trying to live a life but we are finally here.

Thank you to all of my clients and peers for supporting me through this journey at .mindscounselling. It's been and continues to be an honor doing what I love to do while getting to call it my job! ❤️

Let's talk about grief.

Did you know there is more than one type of grief out there?

Anticipatory grief is when there is an expectation that a loved one is going to die. This could be due to old age, terminal illness or perhaps an addiction. Many people are already grieving during this time without even knowing it.

Traumatic grief is where someone has had a loved one die as a result of something traumatic. This could be due to a car accident, a su***de, homicide or something sudden. This type of grief also has the additional layers of trauma processing.

Disenfranchised grief is where someone is grieving a death that often goes unrecognized in society. This could include a substance related death, su***de, abortion or miscarriage. These deaths are often stigmatized and individuals feel that they can not grieve in a normal way.

Ambiguous grief is when there has not been a physical death but a profound sense of loss. This could be a result of an estranged relationship, having a loved one go missing or watching a loved one suffer with mental health and addiction.

Let's talk trauma-informed couples counselling!

Why trauma informed? As a couples therapist, I like to work with each partner by understanding their upbringing, cultures, world views and experiences with trauma. By having more of an individual in-depth knowledge of familiar patterns of behaviors and emotional responses, that is where we can get into the inner conflicts that often occur in the relationship.

These conflicts can often surface as themes like jealousy, emotional avoidance, distrust, insecurity, and more.

By connecting these patterns with a humanistic and trauma informed approach, this can allow for real change to instill healthier and lasting healing with your partner.

Do you struggle with inner conflict? Often, we have an internal dialog that can interfere with our day to day.

This internal dialog can include self blame, criticism, judgment, or punishment. This dialog can also include defensiveness, empathy, or sadness.

In therapy, we work with your parts. Also known as IFS (Internal Family Systems), we provide space for these conflicting parts by acknowledging them, reframing them and by creating new narratives.

Your parts are never trying to work against you, often they are just trying to protect you. By working with them instead of avoiding them, this is where real change begins.

Meet Jennifer, owner and founder of Healing Minds Counselling here in downtown Collingwood Ontario.

Starting out as a social service worker over ten years ago, the journey began working with seniors and patient navigation. From there, this led Jenn to the passion of working in palliative care and grief counselling. Over the years, in working with complex grief, Jenn recognized the need to work with trauma specifically and decided to further her education to become a psychotherapist. Healing Minds Counselling now offers both individual and couples therapy with a trauma informed approach.

When she's not head deep in a book, she's busy being a mom, spending time with friends or exploring the great outdoors Collingwood has to offer.
