In the spirit of International Pain Awareness Month and kids going back to school and starting school sports, letโs continue talking about injuries!
Every tissue in our body (muscles, bones, tendons) has a certain capacity. If we apply a load that is much greater than the tissueโs capacity, thereโs a higher risk of pain and injury ๐. This tends to happen when we start a new activity too quickly or suddenly increase the amount of training weโre doing.
Some factors that may contribute to a lower capacity:
๐ข illness
๐ข lack of sleep
๐ข poor hydration/nutrition
๐ข stress
Some factors that may contribute to a higher load:
๐ข Frequency ๐๐ฝ how often you are doing the activity (did you go from sitting on the couch ๐ for the last two months to suddenly begin swimming ๐ in the lake twice a week over the summer?)
๐ข Intensity ๐๐ฝ how hard you are exercising (when lifting weights, did you go from lifting 5 pounds yesterday to 10 pounds today? ๐๐ฝ)
๐ข Time ๐๐ฝ how long you are active for โฐ (did you go from doing soccer training 4 hours a week to now doing games for an additional 3 hours a week on top of that?)
๐ข Type ๐๐ฝ what kind of activity you are doing (are you super active all year round playing tennis ๐พ and going swimming ๐๐ฟโโ๏ธ , but notice that your knees start to hurt during ski โทseason?)
Hereโs the good news ๐ if we apply that load SLOWLY over time, our tissues will have time to ADAPT. This is what we want!! This is because the capacity of the tissue will slowly increase, and we can manage large loads. Our muscles can get stronger, and bone density may increase ๐ฆด
At Kids Physio, we are here to guide you all year-round to help keep you as active as possible ๐๐พ while also reducing the risk of injury ๐๐ฟโโ๏ธ
