What to Do When Emotions Run High

Instead of reacting immediately, take a moment to identify the emotion you're feeling, such as anger, frustration, or fear. Simply naming the emotion can help you feel more in control.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's okay to press the "pause button" and take a short break. You can say something like, "I'm feeling overwhelmed right now and need a few minutes to collect my thoughts. Can we reconnect in 15 minutes?".

Once you've calmed down, use "I" statements to share your feelings without blaming the other person. For example, instead of saying, "You always make me feel ignored," you could say, "I feel hurt when my ideas are dismissed because it makes me feel like my contributions aren't valued". Remember, active listening and empathy are also key to finding a solution together.

In our new video, we share a valuable lesson from Ted Lasso about the power of curiosity. Instead of making accusations, you can transform a defensive standoff into a genuine conversation by asking questions.

We'll teach you five curious questions to use the next time you face a disagreement. Questions like "Can you help me understand what happened from your perspective?" and "What was your intention when you did or said what you did?" can help you find a better solution.

Unleash the power of nonverbal cues to transform your disagreements into meaningful conversations.

Ever feel like you're hitting a wall during a conflict, no matter what you say? That's because what you're not saying is often more important. According to Dr. Albert Mehrabian's famous breakdown, 93% of communication is nonverbal. This video breaks down the silent signals that can either escalate a disagreement or help you find common ground.

Discover the "No-Nos" and "Yes-Yeses" of body language:

The "No-Nos": Learn which negative cues, like a defensive stance or avoidant gaze, can make you seem closed-off and disinterested.

The "Yes-Yeses": Master positive body language, such as an open posture and an engaged gaze, to show you're listening and ready to resolve the conflict.

Conflict Resolution with Empathy and Understanding

The video, "The 5-Step Guide to Resolving Conflict with Courage & Empathy," provides a model for addressing conflict constructively. The goal is to equip viewers with practical communication skills to build stronger relationships. The video uses an "onion analogy" to explain a five-step collaborative conflict resolution model.

Key takeaways from the video include:

Shifting from "You" to "I" Statements: The first step in addressing conflict is communicating with empathy by converting "you" statements to "I" statements. This approach allows you to express your perspective and feelings without pointing the finger at someone else.

The 5-Step Onion Analogy: This model guides you through peeling back layers of a conflict. You start with the obvious issue (the outside of the onion), then move inward to understand each person's position, their underlying interests, and shared interests. The final layer, the core of the onion, is the shared solution.

The Role of Curiosity: The video emphasizes that curiosity is a key ingredient for uncovering the deeper motivations behind a person's position. Maintaining curiosity helps transform a heated conversation into a collaborative effort to find a solution.

Finding a Shared Solution: The final step involves working together to explore solutions that address the initial issue, respect each other's positions, and acknowledge personal and shared interests.
