JoPPP Europe Impact Symposium June 7, 2026
When essential drugs are unavailable, patients may face delayed treatments, use less effective alternatives, or experience interruptions in care. Each of these consequences can lead to worse health outcomes and increased risks, especially for vulnerable groups. Beyond individual patients, medicine shortages can strain healthcare systems, increase costs, and reduce overall trust in medical services. That’s why these shortages are not just a supply issue, but a significant public health concern.
Heavy reliance on geographically concentrated supply chains, limited economic incentives for low-margin essential drugs, and fragmented national supply chain policies have all contributed to disruptions. Coordinated European strategies are needed to balance the market with public health priorities. Proposals include diversifying manufacturing, strengthening strategic reserves, and implementing joint supply chain mechanisms. These actions must be coupled with transparency in supply chains and early-warning systems. Ultimately, solutions will depend on rethinking medicines not just as commodities but as essential infrastructure. Such a shift requires coordinated investment, cooperation, and governance at the European level.
With this webinar, we will enter the world of community pharmacists. These professionals play a crucial role in managing shortages directly with patients. They are often the first ones to detect supply problems and must quickly adapt to alternatives. Community pharmacists liaise with prescribers to ensure continuity of treatment and therapeutic success.
