Check out the AWESOME work done by Team Watetezi (a.k.a. Team Advocate) from the Global MINDS @ Western 2017 Summer Institute to help PSR Toolkit Graduates be their own mental health advocates and change-makers for other people with serious mental illness in Kenya!

At the Global MINDS 2017 Summer Institute, one student team was tasked with leveraging CREATE's initial work to build mental health awareness and address stigma and social exclusion for people with serious mental illness (PWSMI) in Kenya. Team Watetezi* immediately rose to this challenge. Since...

The PSR Toolkit has Expanded into Hospital Settings!

The CREATE team is evaluating the impacts of implementing the PSR Toolkit in hospital settings in Kenya! Currently, the PSR Toolkit is being delivered to patients and their families at the Level 5 District Hospital and the Mutituni Level 3 Health Centre in Machakos. This research can build capacity within Kenyan mental healthcare providers and educators in recovery-oriented psychosocial rehabilitation content, processes and skills, where little to no such capacity currently exists. This work can also guide further revisions to the PSR Toolkit to further improve its future effectiveness.

Global MINDS @ Western is an interdisciplinary initiative of Western University, Canada focused on innovating for low resource settings in low and middle income countries (LMIC) (e.g., East Africa region) and for marginalized communities within Canada.

Through annual Summer Institutes, Global MINDS @ Western brings together Western University students and students from low to middle income countries (LMIC) to form solution-focused teams to tackle a local mental health system challenge.

The first Summer Institute took place in Machakos, Kenya from May 21- June 3, 2017, and the focus included developing solutions to leverage CREATE, such as:
1) How to continue building mental health awareness and addressing stigma and social exclusion for people with serious mental illness in the community?

2)How to maximize the social/health impact for people with serious mental illness now that CREATE is officially recognized as an work integration social enterprise employing people with disabilities?

Stay tuned for the proposed solutions to these challenges!
And check out the video below to see highlights from the Summer Institute!
