It’s common for babies to experience some jaundice in the early days — and your milk plays a powerful role in helping their bodies clear it.
Bilirubin levels usually peak between days 3 and 5, which often lines up with increased milk volume and more frequent feedings. Every p**p helps! 💩 That’s because p**ping helps your baby eliminate bilirubin naturally.
But when babies aren’t feeding well, jaundice can become more of a concern. Severe jaundice may mean time under phototherapy lights or in a phototherapy blanket — but don’t worry! In most cases, you can still take your baby out to breastfeed as needed.
😴 Jaundiced babies may be sleepy and feed less effectively. In some cases, supplementing with expressed milk, donor milk, or formula may be needed to support their recovery. As bilirubin levels drop, babies usually become more alert and feed better.
