My life in hats

My life in hats My life in hats- Autism & Advocacy Services

My life in hats is a depiction of the many hats a caregiver must wear when raising a child with special needs.

I am a qualified Behaviour Therapist, here to assist you! Message me today to get started! Caregivers. I am a mother of two kiddos diagnosed with Autism. My son, Ben was diagnosed in 2019 and my daughter in 2020. In my personal experience I have been challenged with many roadblocks after my children were diagnosed. Left to figure it all out on my own. All while being encompassed with overwhelming emotions, how to process those emotions and keep moving forward, for my family. A little about me. I am a wife, mother ( mama bear - as most call me) and a nurse. Since my children were diagnosed, Autism has been my focus, it consumes my life in the most beautiful and exhausting way. I know all autism parents can relate to that! I quickly realized that We could not afford ABA therapy for my children as they were already dedicated to speech therapy, Occupational therapy and Literacy therapy. We understood the value in ABA therapy, what it could bring to our family. So, I decided to go back to school for a full year. I enrolled in the Autism and Behaviour Science program at Mohawk college in Hamilton and In 2021 I graduating as an ABA behaviour therapist. This has been many years in the making. Documenting ideas, listening to others describe their needs, research, and learning from my own children. With that being said, I will begin offering services to families and those with autism in 2024. Date announcement TBD in the next coming weeks. Autism Services:

Referral program to be announced at a later date. A little about our children. Ben, who is very sure of himself, he leaves me with no guessing. There is literally no "grey area" with him. He was diagnosed as Moderate in 2019 and only spoke 5 words. We have worked HARD and have been extremely consistent with his therapies. He now speaks over 6500 words including, phrases, sentences and conversing back and forth, telling jokes, and loves to throw in some sarcasm! He is able to express his feelings appropriately and is empathetic towards his peers. How people feel, matters to Ben. He keeps me on my toes, and I love it. He will change the way people think about Autism, and he will teach you things in ways you'd never notice otherwise. Ben's progress is substantial. He has gone from a shy child with no words to a child who was sitting in front of his class reading books last school year. He is integrated into mainstream class for some subjects and we are excited to see him grow beyond all expectations. Ben has a keen interest in traveling the world and is currently learning Japanese for our future family trip that he is planning! He is limitless and we are so proud. Ben has mentioned he wanted to be a math and science teacher one day, but he also wants to own Wendy's and live in a mansion! Anything is possible. Audrey, my extremely intuitive child who is a natural empath. Often putting herself in the shoes of others and mimicking their feelings, but in a unique way, she actually feels what they feel. Audrey communicates beautifully and has since she was a toddler. She wakes up talking and falls asleep talking, makes impeccable eye contact and is also the Queen of masking her feelings. She is very smart and willing to try anything. Audrey have developed a keen and talented way of expressing herself, through drawings, art, creating slime- homemade, sports, and also had a stint with acting! She loves her friends fiercely and is someone you can count on to be there. Her undeniable need to help others was something she possessed from a small child. Her love for curling comes natural and she has found a new love for baseball! Audrey aspires to be a kindergarten teacher one day!

Hey friends! It’s been a minute!

Stay tuned for a big announcement coming soon!

Good evening everyone!

This weekend will consist of being "on call" and working on papers!! Who would have thought 37 years old and back in school but this time, to better educate myself for the well being of my kids!
Autism and Behavioural Science. WHAT.A.PROGRAM. First of all, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Turns out it's an intense Post Grad program that is so intense, I have darker rings around my eyes, eat more chocolate and can down a whole pot of coffee before 12 pm! GOALS. HA!

But I will say this, I am grateful, blessed and have found a new passion that at one time was just in it to teach my kids as they navigate through the world of Autism, but now.... I have discovered a passion of wanting to make changes, serious changes. My focus will be a Needs-Based program for adults. Let's face it, we know early intervention is critical for developing and re-wiring the brain to gain skills and mastery, but there is little to NO services offered to adults with Autism.

Why do you think that is?

I want to know your feedback, I want to know how you feel about this, did you know that this was even, a thing?

I look forward to hearing from you... :-)

Over the last several months!

Well, it's been a while ;-) Nonetheless, here we are November 1st. So much has happened since my last post. Ben is talking so much, Audrey was diagnosed with Level 1 high functioning Autism July 2nd, 2020. So we are now navigating x 2 in the unique world of Autism. I have decided to take on school ( I know, like I need more on my plate). I enrolled into the Autism and Behaviour Science. Basically because I cannot afford the intense cost of an ABA Therapist, so I may as well become one, right?!!

Working from home full time, school-full time- parenting full time and wifeing full time has me tired, just a tad LOL. Surviving off a significant amount of coffee ( I'm sure I'm addicted) but, never the less at this point in my life, it's a necessity. I must have tried 1000 weightloss challenges, joining groups, that I paid for and still unable to find time for self care. So a wise friend told me, just be kind to yourself. So, cookies and cake it is haha.

Oh and before I forget- We also jumped into the world of Reno's. New roof that cost more than first vehicle and updating the main floor. Sweet candy it's been a roller coster!

So, That is pretty much the update for now, Hopefully I will get back here before the 6 months fly by!

This is a “hat” I wear often, almost daily.

When I wear this hat, I am reminded of how vulnerable people are when they are sick.

How much they need my care, knowledge, competence and experience to assist with getting them healthy again.

This hat is not a hat I wear alone. It’s a hat I wear in unison with many of my dearest friends. Some of the smartest and most compassionate people in the world.

This hat always has me feeling grateful, blessed and friggen exhausted!

But I wouldn’t trade this hat in for anything.

My nursing hat!

Now! 🤔 if only my kids understood how important this hat is and how much sleep it needs to function like a typical human who gets more than 4 hours of sleep!

This beauty of a mug was given to me by one of my staff, fits me to a T.

Joe” is she trying to tell you something”

Oh and that is my “isolation hair” and “ laugh lines” 🤷‍♀️🙄🤣

So!

If anyone knows me, they know I’m brutally honest. I
“ eye roll” a lot and my life is utter chaos.

I’m also very sensitive and tend to mask that with intense sarcasm. Some call that coping strategy, I call it survival.

I hope you laugh out loud! Enjoy the read.
