The growth and loss of hair may seem like a simple process but the hair growth cycle is actually composed of three distinct phases. These phases of hair growth have been studied extensively to better understand how hair grows and what can be done to prevent or treat hair loss.

1️⃣The hair growth cycle begins with the anagen phase.
- also known as the growth phase
- this is the longest phase, lasting about 3-5 years
- in some people, this phase can last for 7 or more years
- during this phase, hair follicles are pushing out hairs that continue to grow until they are cut
- about 90% of the hairs on your head are in this phase at any given time

2️⃣Then comes the catagen phase.
- also known as the transition phase
- this is a short phase and lasts about 10 days or so
- during this phase, hair follicles shrink and hair growth slows
- hair also separates from the bottom of the hair follicle
- only about 5% of the hairs on your head are in the catagen phase at any given time

3️⃣Lastly, the telogen phase.
- also known as the resting phase
- this phase typically lasts around 3 months
- hairs don’t grow during the telogen phase, and in fact, this is the phase when hair is shed from the scalp
- about 10-15% of your scalp hairs are in this phase at any given time

At any given moment, each hair follicle is going through the hair growth cycle at different stages. Having this natural cycle of growth and shedding is the reason why we always have hair!

The two principal methods of hair transplants are FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction).

𝙁𝙐𝙀 (𝙁𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙩 𝙀𝙭𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣) is an advanced hair transplant procedure in which each follicular unit is removed separately instead of in strips of hair bearing skin. This is an important distinction as our hair naturally grows in follicular units that typically contain 1 to 4 hairs.

There are many advantages to the FUE technique for hair restoration over traditional transplantation, including:

- Quicker recovery time
- Hair donor areas are left with virtually undetectable scars
- Regrowth of hair in donor area happens quickly, making any bruising almost unnoticeable

Many patients often worry about 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙛𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙤𝙧 when it comes to hair transplants. We have all seen pictures or videos of hair transplants, where patients have little red dots all over their scalp. Although this may seem extremely painful, in reality it is not that bad at all.

Before your hair transplant procedure, you are given a local anesthetic to numb the scalp to minimize pain and discomfort. This is very similar to going to the dentist. Once the anesthetic takes effect, you can simply relax and let us take care of the rest!

The hair transplant surgeon then dissects the strip into individual hair grafts, which is then used to insert into the balding areas of the head. This is referred to as the “recipient area”. These healthy hair grafts are implanted in a natural grouping of one to four hairs at a time.

FUT is a very effective, long-lasting treatment for hair loss. However, it is not suitable for everybody.
