Stagnant behaviour and rumination are very common when struggling with disordered eating. For example worrying about how many calories we just consumed in a meal, anxiety about over eating the previous day. Likewise, it may also place worry and anxiety around the future. For example, what if I over eat later? what am I going to eat tomorrow? What if I’m invited to dinner this week? We completely lose sight of the present and because these problems occur only in the past or in the future, they cannot be solved. These situations are no longer in our control enforcing greater discomfort. We can only build safety and solution in our present moment!

Why is valued living therapy so important in my practice? Because it is an essential tool used to navigate what you as a client truly want in life. It aids in building a foundation for your individual healing process! Valued living is the process of facilitating contact with your chosen values each and everyday, ask yourself “how does this benefit me in this moment? Will I feel the same way in 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days?” “Is this going to bring me towards my long term goals and values?” “Are my current actions a quick solution for an overwhelming emotion which I am experiencing?” This process helps to unpack both intentional and unintentional self avoidant actions!

Perfectionist behaviour ultimately damages the mind-body connection. This breakdown between mind and body forces us to inhabit one space within ourselves, the mind. Only living within the perfectionist mind causes alienation to the physical being that you are. Once we no longer view our body as our own this creates the narrative that we also do not have control over it and ultimately leads to dysmorphia and disordered eating. Breaking down perfectionism helps restore the mind-body cohabitation you need!

Maladaptive perfectionism is a coping mechanism which many clients with disordered eating, anxiety & depression maintain. This all or nothing mindset is the number 1 set back I see individuals struggle with “well I can’t eat all of this, so I’m not going to have any at all” or “I know I have to work my way up, so I’m not going to start at all”. I work extensively to address nutritional deficiencies leading to these symptoms but I also address poor coping mechanisms impacting psychological well-being. Health is a holistic effort, all physical and psychological symptoms are always addressed in my practice!

Strategies I use to help clients are 1. addressing the “Cycle of avoidance” which is a very toxic cycle many clients slip into. The cycle of avoidance works to protect disordered eating patterns by reinforcing anxious thoughts and beliefs around food; continuous avoidance breaks confidence and builds a deeper fear. The second strategy is 2. “Neutralizing” food. By re-educating the client about the positive & nutritional values regarding food. We are able to “fact check” what beliefs are true and what are invasive ideas, held by the disordered voice. What do we know to actually be true about this food? How have we demonized or glorified specific foods and how can we bring this back to a neutral place!
