"Predictable, Avoidable and Harmful: Canada’s Ni****ne Pouch Fiasco"

This is the title of an article I have just published in Filter Mag. (https://filtermag.org/canada-zonnic-ni****ne-pouch/ )

In brief:

Health Canada failed to set a legal minimum age for ni****ne pouches.

Imperial To***co Canada launched Zonnic pouches with lifestyle ads aimed at young adults.

Health charities were outraged: “Health Canada makes it legal for flavoured ni****ne products from Imperial To***co to be sold to children,” - Canadian Cancer Society.

No one noted that ni****ne pouches reduce smoking more than ni****ne gum and are preferred by people who smoke. No one said that they could reduce the 21,366 cancer deaths caused by smoking every year in Canada. The media was only concerned with the potential for abuse by teenagers.

Now, the Federal Health minister promises to place severe restrictions on the sale of Zonnic to protect children.

An ITC spokesperson said: “It is irresponsible for governments to target a legal product that smokers are finding an effective [way] to quit, simply because they dislike the inconvenient fact that the manufacturer is a to***co company.”

Everyone in a position of trust or authority has messed up. A significant opportunity to save the lives of Canadians who smoke has been squandered by government incompetence, corporate greed and so-called "health" charities that are more concerned about maintaining their public profile and fundraising than actually saving lives.

Devastating.

People who smoke, even though they would prefer not to, are often dependent on ni****ne. Ni****ne, outside of a cigarette, is a fairly harmless natural product present in many vegetables It is the 7,000 other chemicals in cigarette smoke that cause cancer, heart disease and lung disease.
There are many other safer forms of ni****ne, including v**e, heat-not-burn devices, snus, oral ni****ne pouches and medical ni****ne replacement therapy.
People who smoke need advice about safer alternatives to continuing to smoke ci******es.
