Do your part to help maintain joint health over time ✔️ (please read first, as this topic is nuanced. And yes, there are factors beyond this too)
➡️ The rates of debilitating OA (osteoarthritis) have been increasing in the past few decades. Joint replacement surgery has also become more common. It is not uncommon to see people in their 50’s and 60’s with one or more major joints replaced.
➡️ Although OA is multifactorial, it can be drastically slowed down over time. This is not meant to cover ALL aspects of OA, but to discuss movement and mobility as major contributing factors which are completely under your control. The same can be said about the need for joint replacements - they can be prevented or delayed if joint health is prioritized.
✖️ Here’s the thing: prevention starts early. It starts now.
➡️ A big part of maintaining joint health is maintaining joint mobility and moving well/often:
▪️Joint mobility: maintaining mobility means maintaining the hardware of your body. Your hip should be able to move fully like a hip, your ankle like an ankle. There is no reason why your joints should move less or become stiffer as you, but it’s up to you to maintain it. Having joints thatmovewell is a prerequisite for YOU being able to move well.
▪️ Moving well/often: By this I mean being able to CONTROL your joints while moving. Having joint stability (control in the presence of change) is key here. Having the pre requisite strength to be able to control your joints is apart of this. Moving well, and then moving often exposes your joints to regular movement.
🔑 Regular MOVEMENT is how joints maintain their synovial fluid, nutrition, and overall health. Having joints that can actually move fully is a key part of this.
✅ If you maintain joint mobility and move well/often over time, this is a MAJOR factor in joint health and the delay/prevention of debilitating OA.
✅ The earlier you make this a habit (like brushing your teeth or eating well), the better.
