May 17 DIPG Day of Awareness / 17 mai Journée de Sensibilisation au GITC

May 17 DIPG Day of Awareness / 17 mai Journée de Sensibilisation au GITC We are petitioning the Canadian House of Commons to declare May 17 National DIPG/GITC Awareness Day L'enfant reste cognitivement conscient de ce qui se passe.

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) / gliome infiltrant du tronc cérébral (GITC) is an aggressive brain tumour found in a part of the brainstem called the pons. It is currently inoperable, incurable, and with 0% survival rate. DIPG/GITC is the leading cause of brain tumour deaths in children in Canada and the median survival time is 9 months from diagnosis. It slowly takes away vital functions like - the ability to move, hearing, vision, swallowing, and eventually breathing, while the child remains cognitively aware of what is happening. It affects children typically between ages 5-7 but can also occur in adults. Lack of awareness and funding have delayed any medical advancement and treatments for the last 60+ years. GRANT ANNOUNCEMENT 📢 Brain Cancer Canada (BCC) has just matched the incredible $50,000 raised by the relentless DIPG community, bringing the total to a extraordinary $100,000! This grant is awarded to the brilliant Dr. James T. Rutka, Paediatric Neurosurgeon at SickKids Foundation, and his team, pioneering a novel approach to combat Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a disease without effective treatments.

“The primary aim of our research is to explore innovative methods to deliver therapeutics more effectively to DIPGs,” Dr. Rutka said. “We are excited that our encouraging pre-clinical studies on DIPG have now been translated into the ‘first in human’ clinical trial for children with this otherwise fatal brainstem tumour. By combining MRgFUS with patient-specific biologicals, we hope to increase the concentration of active compounds within this brain-stem tumour, potentially influencing tumour growth and survival.”

We are thankful for the support offered by all involved in the DIPG community, and incredibly grateful for the efforts of the Borkowski, Morissette-Gagne, Ellsworth, Palmowski and Shankar families. It's your strength, your resilience, and your unwavering commitment that has brought us here today.

This is neither the beginning nor the end of this fight. We're in this together, for the long haul.

To everyone who's contributed, whether through fundraising, raising awareness, or lending emotional support, we see you and appreciate you. Thank you.🩶💛

This grant is the third of five Brain Cancer Canada will issue in May 2023 as part of the Gray in May brain cancer awareness month campaign. By providing crucial funding for high-risk, high-reward projects like Dr. Rutka’s, Brain Cancer Canada aims to accelerate the development of new therapies and improve the lives of those affected by brain cancer.

Merci! Thank you CN Tower / Tour CN

For years, DIPG families across Canada have been fervently petitioning the Canadian government to designate May 17th as DIPG Awareness Day, following the lead of Australia, the United States, and some countries in Europe.

We are thrilled to announce their persistence is so close to paying off. Next year, at this time, May 17th should officially be recognized as DIPG Awareness Day in Canada.

Tomorrow, the CN Tower will light yellow💛 and grey🩶 for DIPG awareness.

BCC would like to thank Ambassadors, Michal and Jackie Borkowski for arranging this special lighting for their DIPG angel, Isabelle, and all the other families who have been affected by this most dreadful disease.

🧠ABOUT DIPG
Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is an aggressive, cancerous tumour that develops in the brain stem (pons). This area of the brain controls basic functions: breathing, hearing, talking, vision, and more. It is the most lethal type of pediatric brain cancer, and the #1 cause of cancer death in children under 15. There are no known effective treatments, with a survival rate of 0%. Surgery is typically not recommended because the outcome would likely cause more harm than good. Unlike with many other types of pediatric cancers, there has been very little progress in finding effective treatments, due to the location of the tumour as well insufficient funding.

NOTE: The CN Tower Toronto lighting begins at sunset but will not be fully visible until the sky darkens sufficiently, approximately 30 minutes later. If you can’t make it to Toronto, you can catch the lighting on Earthcam https://www.cntower.ca/live-views

Brain Cancer Canada would like to thank in Toronto for their ongoing support in helping us shine a light on the need for greater awareness and funding for malignant brain tumours.

It has been a few months since we've shared an update about our efforts to petition the federal government to declare May 17 National DIPG/GITC Awareness Day in Canada.

Much as been happening behind the scenes and it feels incredibly fitting to be sharing this news with you today, on May 17!

On April 20 Joël Godin - Député de Portneuf—Jacques-Cartier shared some amazing news! With the help of Senator Yonah Martin, Bill S-260 was tabled for its first reading in the Senate. If Bill S-260 is approved by the Senate, May 17 will become a National DIPG/GITC Awareness Day! To say we are grateful and in awe of this news is an understatement!

Bill S-260 still has a few steps to follow through official Senate procedures before it is officially approved so we are all anxiously awaiting confirmation of its final approval and will share news here as soon as we know!

Thank you MP Joel Godin and Senator Yonah Martin! Because of you, families faced with DIPG/GITC will be seen. Official recognition of May 17 as DIPG/GITC Awareness Day in Canada is a very large step towards more support, treatment and a cure! We are all so grateful for your support!
