Recent research shows that communities exposed to higher levels of microplastic pollution are also seeing increased rates of 𝗧𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝟮 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗲𝘁𝗲𝘀 and 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 — reminding us that environmental health and human health are deeply connected.

♻️ Only 9% of plastic in Canada actually gets recycled.

Imagine if a basketball player only made 9% of their shots — they’d be cut from the team. Yet, that’s the “success rate” of our recycling system.
The truth: tossing plastic vials in the blue bin doesn’t guarantee they’ll be recycled. Most still end up in landfill or incineration.
While we push for system change, there’s something we can do today: choose 𝗿𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. With 𝗩𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲, prescription vials don’t get tossed; they’re washed, sanitized, and put back into circulation.
🌱 Small cycles. Big impact.

Did you see the news saying glass bottles have more microplastics than plastic ones? 😲
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗱𝗻’𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀 — they came from painted caps that flake during bottling.
The answer isn’t to give up on glass. It’s to design smarter, cleaner systems.

At Lake 378 in Ontario, scientists are conducting a world-first experiment, intentionally introducing microplastics into a controlled lake environment to track how they move through ecosystems.
Early findings show that 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝗽𝘂𝘁𝘀, not just legacy pollution drive the greatest harm.

This research offers valuable lessons for policy, product design, and industries like healthcare, where single-use plastics are still the norm.
