“A walk in nature walks the soul back home.” –Mary Davis

My favourite thing to do each day is walk my dogs. I get to be in nature, appreciate beauty, exercise, and either listen to a podcast or just breathe.

Did you know that gratitude can increase your happiness?

It may seem like a simple fix, but research has shown that positive thought patterns, such as gratitude, influences our emotions. So, by taking a moment to appreciate the aspects of your life that you take for granted, over time, you can increase the positive emotions you feel towards your life, and yourself.

Two ways you can implement gratitude in your daily life include: gratitude journaling (listing things you are grateful for each day in a journal or your notes app), and looking for the positive in mundane experiences, such as appreciating flowers you see on a walk.

This breakfast took about 15 minutes and was so delicious.

Whisked 2 eggs in a bowl, grated 1 whole zucchini added some salt and pepper, chilli flakes, 2tsp of coconut flour, 1 tsp arrowroot flour.

The dip is just soy sauce or tamari, sesame oil, and rice wine vinegar. Add a little side salad and you’ve got a great start to your day!

I remember one of my kids really wanted to play hockey. He relentlessly begged until we finally said yes. That first day, he got on that ice and saw the kids (who probably played hockey since they came out of the womb) zoom past him. He walked off that ice and was done. He genuinely thought he was going to be an instant hockey star, when the reality was he could barely stand on his skates.

Have you ever felt like this? You eat all the healthy food, do one Hiit workout and expect to feel different right away. To be a different size in an instant.

I’ve been there too!

Thankfully, our son had an incredible coach who came over and skated around the rink with him, encouraging him to keep going. We were so proud of him for his perseverance!

Lifestyle habits are difficult and take time and hard work. One small step at a time. You will get there!

Feeling tired? Stressed? Like you’ve had way too many random meals?

Yesterday, I talked about balance, and some of the areas you can focus on to help bring it to your day.

What are some things that help you feel balanced?

How do we create a balanced life?

There are so many areas in our life that can become “out of balance” — whether it’s our work/life balance, nourishing vs. celebratory foods, or even intense exercise vs. a sedentary lifestyle.

There are extremes for everything. Even things that seem good for us. Summer has a way of throwing things out of balance — and while this can be negative at times, it is often a good thing!

How can we enjoy summer — from staying up late to sit around a campfire, having your favourite ice-cream (peanut butter fudge crunch, for me) — but not forget all of the healthy habits we’ve worked hard to create?

One thing to remember is that there are seasons in life. Celebrations and vacations are examples of this. We get to experience new things and enjoy some of our tried-and-true favourites!

At the same time, we can be mindful of our bodies and tune-in to how we’re feeling.

Ask yourself: What do I need today? Which areas of my life are unbalanced, this week?

We’re not going to have a perfectly balanced life 100% of the time, so make space for fun, and embrace the sunshine and adventure of summer!

My son and I were having a great day yesterday at Riverdale Farm and this really cool church with Gothic Revival architecture and then…we decided to hop a fence and now I have a very angry ankle. 😬

I’ve been trying to up my protein lately. Maisy, my dog, was really hoping I would share. Eggs are her favourite!

This snack — with soft boiled eggs, hummus, quick pickled onions (if you haven’t made some, you really should!), and watermelon radish — was perfect!

Protein keeps you full between meals, leaving you feeling satiated.

Plus, if you’re past the age of 30, we lose 3-8% of our muscle per decade. So, if you want to maintain your muscle, lose weight, and/or build muscle, you will definitely want to prioritize getting in your protein!

There is some debate about how much protein you should consume per day, but 0.7g/lb to 1g/lb of body weight seems to be the average.

Aiming for a serving of protein at each meal is a great place to start.
