I have never regretted the things I tried my hand at and “failed,” but I can tell you those “what ifs” are loud af.

My mantra this year is “I’m living my dream life” and honestly I’d rather be exhausted from chasing the dream, than rested but RESTLESS from living a life without spark.

To settle for mediocre is to die while still being alive.

Leadership starts from within; primarily knowing how to handle your emotions.

Fighting and ignoring emotions actually tends to amplify them and makes us more reactive. So here’s a step by step of how you can use them as information to make better decisions (and so you don’t have to regret your reactions and then replay them after you’ve logged out for the day):

1. Notice the physical cue - like heart rate spike or the drop in the pit of your stomach
2. Check your inner story - what was said vs what you told yourself about what was said?
3. Label the emotion - name it so that you can process it in the logical part of your brain instead of the emotional one
4. Create a gap - adjusted your chair, write something in your notebook, or take a sip of water. Basically buy yourself time for your brain to chill
5. Neutral inquiry - put the focus back on the work through a question

The most successful leaders have one thing in common and it’s not charisma.

It’s emotional predictability.

True influence is built on self-regulation and staying level under pressure is not a character trait, it’s a built habit.

If you haven’t trained your mind, your brain defaults to survival mode the second a project goes sideways. You become reactive and your team becomes fearful.

The take 5 technique is an oldie but a goodie and the nice thing is, you always have your hands with you.

Hold your hand out and trace your fingers as you inhale and exhale, do this for all 5 fingers.

This 60 second brain workout pulls you out of your emotional centres of the brain and puts your logical mind back in charge.

When you are predictable, your team feels safe. When they feel safe, they perform.

Keeping your cool isn’t a personality trait, it’s a sign of a well trained brain and regulated nervous system.

Science shows that you can actually rewire your brain to be more effective at handling difficult situations through a regular meditation practice.

It’s even shown to shrink the size of the amygdala and thicken the prefrontal cortex. It really is like training a muscle in the gym.

Your team will become exactly who you perceive them to be.

The research shows that when people feel they’re being judged against a label, their performance actually drops because the mental energy used to fight that label is energy taken away from the work.

This phenomenon is called Stereotype Threat and these findings were a result of examining if the social belief that boys are better at math than girls, is actually true. Turned out, when girls were primed with a statement that read “this test has shown gender differences in the past,” that suggestion alone was enough to tank their performance. Without that priming they performed equally as well as their male counterparts.

Instead:

1. Do a quick audit: What is the first word that comes to mind for each team member? Is it growth-oriented or fixed?

2. Challenge your perceptions: Actively look for evidence that contradicts the labels you’ve given people.

3. Adjust your language: replace “They aren’t good at X” with “They are currently developing their skills in X.”
