SIVANANDA YOGA RETREAT
Highlights from a five-day Yoga and Nature Retreat at Sivananda Ashram Yoga Camp in Val-Morin Quebec. A truly authentic, immersive and challenging experience that included twice daily:

FEE:
$36 for any 3 classes, $54 for all 6 classes paid in advance.

Back to Yoga after Hip Replacement Surgery 😊
I have a new right hip!
Today marks four weeks since my surgery, and I am almost back to normal. I have done a gentle sun salutation, held tree and other balance poses and done lots of gentle mat work. I look forward to easing back into classes with my fabulous supportive community next week. 💖
My Osteoarthritis progressed over recent years from “moderate degeneration” to “advanced osteoarthritis with complete joint space loss” and “severe bone-on-bone arthritis”. Some might say yoga caused or aggravated my arthritis, but many more would say yoga helped manage my arthritis. What I do know is that Yoga, which is a holistic lifestyle, contributed to a positive pre-operative assessment of “This lady is quite small and fit her BMI is 20”, and has definitely helped me recover well. Breathing, along with mind-body awareness and conditioning have all played a significant part.
A big THANK-YOU to my yoga community who surrounded me with all the care and support needed to proceed with the surgery, and then recover well from it. 🙏💖🙏
The attached photo is from Brian Gladnick MD’s website, but looks very similar to my personal X-ray. What an amazing feat performed through a 3.5” incision by Dr. Shawn Brian Garbedian and the great NYGH team! 🙏🤩🙏

(note we are back to 10:30 start time on Saturday)

Front to Back: The Simple Magic of Putting Your Head Down
Worth taking note of this from Barrie Risman, and giving it a try. I often suggest trying to position yourself so your forehead makes contact with something - your hands, a yoga block, blanket, surface of the floor, chair or table. Aside from reliving strain on your neck, this blog helps explain even greater benefits.

Whether I rest my head on a block in a standing forward fold, settle Child's Pose on floor, or simply lean forward at my desk, the gentle pressure to the forehead works quickly - almost magically - to create a sense of spaciousness that quiets agitation and bring near-instant calm.

Sciatic Nerve Floss:
I've been hearing about more and more sciatic nerve problems recently so wanted to share this as both a relief movement and for preventative conditioning.
- Flex your foot on the bend, point your foot on the extension, and only extend the leg to your edge, listening to your body.
- If you can't easily interlace hands behind your thighs, use a strap so you don't strain your arms, shoulders or neck.
- You can even try this floss seated in a chair.
