Summer Sun & Safer Skin: Why Choosing the Right Sunscreen Matters

Summer is a beautiful time to be outside, but as the temperatures rise, so does the conversation around sunscreen. While sun protection is essential, not all sunscreens are created equal — and many of the common brands on drugstore shelves contain ingredients that may do more harm than good over time.

Your Skin: More Than Just a Barrier

Your skin is your largest organ, and it’s highly absorbent. What you put on your skin doesn’t just stay there — it’s absorbed transdermally and can make its way into your bloodstream, lymphatic system, and fat tissue. That means the chemicals in conventional sunscreens don’t just sit on the surface; many of them enter your body and stay there.

Over time, these compounds can accumulate, especially if they’re not easily broken down or detoxified by your liver. Some may be stored in fat, while others burden your hormonal system, disrupt cellular health, or create inflammation.

Common Chemicals to Avoid in Sunscreen

Here are some of the most concerning ingredients often found in conventional sunscreens:
• Oxybenzone – Linked to hormone disruption and allergic skin reactions; has been detected in breast milk, blood, and urine.
• Octinoxate – Another hormone disruptor; also harmful to marine life and coral reefs.
• Homosalate – May interfere with estrogen, androgen, and progesterone levels.
• Avobenzone – Can break down quickly in the sun and may produce free radicals.
• Fragrance/Parfum – Often a blend of undisclosed synthetic chemicals, many of which are toxic or sensitizing.

These ingredients may increase the risk of:
• Hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues
• Skin irritation and allergic reactions
• Inflammation and immune burden
• Long-term concerns such as endocrine disruption and toxic buildup in fat and lymphatic tissue

A Better Alternative: Mineral Sunscreens

Mineral-based sunscreens use physical blockers like:
• Zinc oxide
• Titanium dioxide

These ingredients sit on top of the skin and reflect UV rays rather than absorbing them. When non-nano and free of other chemical additives, these minerals are considered safe and effective, even for babies and sensitive skin.

Look for:
• “Non-nano zinc oxide” (means it won’t pe*****te skin or harm ocean life)
• Broad-spectrum protection (protects from UVA & UVB rays)
• Fragrance-free or scented with pure essential oils
• Certified organic or made with natural plant-based ingredients

Where to Find Clean Sunscreens

You can find natural, mineral-based sunscreens at:
• Health food stores (like Whole Foods, Nature’s Fare, Community Natural Foods)
• Natural pharmacies and co-ops
• Online (well.ca, iHerb, Thrive Market, or direct from brand websites)
• Healthy living sections of large stores like Loblaws, Superstore, and even some Shoppers Drug Marts or Targets

Trusted Natural Sunscreen Brands to Look For
• Badger
• ThinkSport / ThinkBaby
• Green Beaver (Canadian)
• Earth Mama Organics
• Raw Elements
• Attitude (Canadian)
• All Good
• Babo Botanicals
• Goddess Garden Organics

Always read the label — even natural-looking brands sometimes sneak in chemical filters or preservatives.

Bonus Tips for Sun Protection
• Cover up with breathable fabrics, wide-brim hats, and sunglasses.
• Avoid the midday sun (11am–3pm).
• Support your skin from within with antioxidant-rich foods like berries, leafy greens, and healthy fats (omega-3s).
• Stay hydrated — water helps your body flush out toxins and stay resilient.

Final Thoughts

Sunscreen is about protection, but true protection means caring for the whole body — not just blocking rays. Choosing a clean, mineral-based sunscreen respects both your health and the planet. And remember: your skin is sacred. What you put on it should be nourishing, clean, and safe.

🍷 Alcohol and Estrogen: How Drinking Affects Hormonal Balance

Alcohol is a normalized part of many cultures—used to celebrate, unwind, or socialize. But while occasional drinking may seem harmless, alcohol has a measurable impact on your hormonal system, particularly estrogen. Whether you’re trying to support menstrual health, navigate perimenopause, or maintain hormonal balance in general, understanding how alcohol affects estrogen is essential.

🌿 What Is Estrogen, and Why Does Balance Matter?

Estrogen is a key hormone in both women and men, though levels are naturally much higher in women. It supports:
• Menstrual and reproductive health
• Bone density
• Mood regulation
• Skin elasticity
• Cardiovascular health

In men, estrogen plays a subtler but important role in s***m development, libido, and brain function. Too much or too little estrogen in any body can cause problems, and alcohol can tip the scales.

🔄 How Alcohol Affects Estrogen Levels

1. Disrupts Liver Function

The liver plays a critical role in breaking down and clearing out excess estrogen. Alcohol burdens the liver, making it less efficient at metabolizing estrogen—which means estrogen can build up in the body.

2. Increases Estrogen in Women

Studies show that alcohol—even in moderate amounts—can raise circulating estrogen levels in women. This is especially concerning for those who:
• Experience PMS, PCOS, fibroids, or endometriosis
• Are going through perimenopause
• Have a family or personal history of breast cancer

3. Decreases Testosterone and Disrupts Estrogen Balance in Men

In men, alcohol:
• Reduces testosterone production by affecting the te**es and pituitary gland
• Impairs liver detox pathways, allowing estrogen to accumulate
• Over time, this can cause symptoms like:
• Fat gain (especially around the chest)
• Low libido and erectile dysfunction
• Mood instability or fatigue
• Gynecomastia (breast tissue development)

✨ Feedback Matters: Say it with Encouragement ✨

Did you know that while criticism can push people to improve, it’s positive feedback and encouragement that actually lead to the biggest growth in performance?

🔍 Research shows:
• Criticism might spark short-term motivation—but it often triggers defensiveness and lowers morale.
• Encouragement builds confidence, motivation, and stronger, more consistent results.
• The best leaders and teams give feedback that’s constructive, clear, and kind.

📚 A 2024 study published in the Journal of Behavioral and Experimental Economics found that positive feedback led to significantly stronger performance, while negative feedback showed no measurable improvement. (source)

Whether you’re leading a team, supporting a colleague, or showing up for yourself—don’t underestimate the power of a “you’re doing great” or “I see your effort.”

💬 What kind of feedback has helped you grow the most?

🌬️ Why You Might Want to Rethink Paraffin Candles — And What to Use Instead 🕯️

Many of us love lighting a candle to create a cozy vibe—but did you know the type of candle you use matters more than you might think?

Most conventional candles are made from paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum refining. When burned, paraffin candles can release toxic chemicals like benzene, toluene, and formaldehyde into the air—substances linked to respiratory irritation and, at higher exposures, cancer. They also emit soot, which can coat your walls, ceilings, and lungs over time.

Paraffin wax also comes from non-renewable fossil fuels, so using it adds to pollution and climate change. And if the candle contains synthetic fragrances or dyes, it can further affect your indoor air quality and trigger headaches or allergies.

💚 Better Alternatives for Healthier Homes

Instead of paraffin, consider these natural options that are healthier for you and the environment:

🕯️ Beeswax Candles
• Burn cleanly and brightly with no harmful chemicals
• Naturally purify the air by releasing negative ions
• Support sustainable beekeeping

🕯️ Soy Wax Candles
• Renewable and biodegradable
• Burn slower and cleaner than paraffin

🕯️ Coconut Wax Candles
• Sustainably harvested
• Excellent scent throw when blended with essential oils

💡 And here’s the best part:
You might notice that natural candles are sometimes smaller—but don’t let that fool you! Beeswax, soy, and coconut wax candles burn slower and cleaner, so they last much longer than the same size paraffin candle. You get more hours of cozy, clean light—and healthier air—without all the soot and toxins.

✨ A Small Change That Makes a Big Difference
Choosing natural candles is an easy way to create a healthier, more mindful home and support sustainable practices. 🌱

Softness Without Self-Abandonment
(A Living Love Daily Check-In)

There’s a quiet art to staying open in love without losing yourself in it.
To offering warmth without managing.
To being soft without collapsing.
To letting someone have space without making yourself disappear.

This is for the woman who has depth in her eyes and tenderness in her hands—
but who’s tired of carrying the weight of the emotional work alone.

Let this be your reminder:

You can stay open without chasing.
You can honor space without shutting down.
You can speak your truth without making demands.

The love that’s meant for you will not require you to abandon yourself.

Save this post. Return to it when your nervous system wants to overgive, overtalk, or overprove.
Let this be your daily pause, your emotional compass, your invitation back home to you.
