I am often reminded and awed by the resilience of the human spirit. I have the great privilege to work closely with individuals, groups and professional teams that have faced or are facing great challenges and they constantly inspire me.
One of the great lessons I’ve learned through my own challenges has been to look for joy at every turn. There’s no doubt that some days are tougher than others to do this. But what I know for sure, it’s always worth the effort to seek it out.
Today I am in Halifax, Nova Scotia as hurricane Fiona comes barreling at us. I spent the morning walking in the rain, seeing beauty everywhere - humans, animals and nature. The people I’ve met in Halifax embody both resilience and joy - an amazing combination. I’m here to present a session to a conference of medical and psychosocial professionals on how they can promote post-traumatic growth in a clinical setting. While I look forward to sharing this presentation, I’m making tweaks based on the inspired attitude of those around me facing a great natural threat.
Takeaways for me from the past 24 hours:
✅ Joy is all around me, I just need to remember to look for it 🌺
✅ People (including me) can be infinitely resilient 🙃
✅ An open mind can lead to amazing things 🌟
✅ A good rain jacket is a wonderful thing to own 🌧️
