The Shift Worker's Guide

The Shift Worker's Guide This is a page for anyone who does any kind of shift work ...it's not your normal 9-5 (Who would want to?)

Sound like anyone you know? Want to learn even more?

It’s about and for everyone who works shifts – or more correctly – doesn’t work 9-5. Police, Fire, Ambulance, Nurses, Doctors, Hospital Staff, Gas Station Attendants, Factory Workers, Transit, Truck Drivers, Electrical Services, Airline Workers, Food Services, Hotel Workers …our list is endless isn’t it? There’s a bucket load of info out there about staying healthy by following regular regimes for fitness and eating and sleeping…. And thanks for that, but it’s not really helpful in the long run is it? I sent in questions for Dr. Oz but he didn’t answer – “How about a few suggestions for staying healthy as a shift worker?” His staff didn’t get back to me. And this one which I still think is a pretty good question – “If a risk factor for breast cancer in female shift workers is low levels of melatonin, would taking melatonin regularly, reduce my chances of developing the disease?” Nada on the come back for that as well. Take a moment to sign up for our newsletter "While You Were Sleeping" for extras not included on the Face Book page. This is not a page to complain about your employer, or your co-workers. .... Wasn't an otter all the time. Probably I can think of a few times. Maybe. I've seen it though. Whatever it takes. When witnessed we shall call it "ottering"... or "Steve-ing". Hmmm. Better leave Steve alone. Ottering it is.

A review I read said that it was not good at all. That it was a tired mash up of the actual show “cops” and the usual TV fodder police procedural. That the inclusion of body cam footage was uneccesary & that there was little chance that policing as a whole was as dangerous & life threatening (to the police) as was portrayed. Hmm.  If you think it’s not real, then tell us what is real. Lori Loughlin, in her role as the Chief, was described as “flinty”, stiff, & unbelievable.  I’ve come up against a few like that… “flinty”s not the word I’d use, the 3rd day of the week maybe (not Wednesday), but I’m not writing it. So they got that right too.

Watched it. Liked it. Here’s why:

8 episodes all 25-30 minutes,  & having worked emergency services where you have to do 143 & 1/2 things at the same time, these short spurts work for me. My attention span can handle it. The action & interactions between levels of authority, between TOs & newbies,  between agencies, between criminals, & the overall dialogue are believable. The family lives of the main characters are (lightly) included — also believable. It touches on some touchy things like being held back and by who (I was wrong) in the end on that one.

It’s top 10 on Amazon Prime right now. All episodes out. Good binge for those bone tired days off.

Life's hard. Harder for those in these jobs you all do. What you see. What you hear. What you remember. What you can't forget. This repost from hits. This week, pretty hard & close to home. So yes look out for others but also look inward for yourself.

Today in WTAF News — from CNN — ‘cause being tired is getting some serious attention these days ‘cause there’s money to be made under those sheets.

Going on a vacation might seem like a rather unconventional way to try to improve your sleep habits. But sleep tourism has been growing in popularity for a number of years, with an increasing amount of sleep-focused stays popping up in hotels and resorts across the world. Interest has skyrocketed since the pandemic, with a number of high profile establishments focusing their attention on those suffering from sleep-deprivation.

Over the past 12 months, Park Hyatt New York has opened the Bryte Restorative Sleep Suite , a 900-square-foot suite filled with sleep-enhancing amenities, while Rosewood Hotels & Resorts recently launched a collection of retreats called the Alchemy of Sleep , which are designed to “promote rest.”

Zedwell, London’s first sleep-centric hotel, which features rooms equipped with innovative soundproofing, opened in early 2020, and Swedish bed manufacturer Hastens established the world’s first Hästens Sleep Spa Hotel,  a 15-room boutique hotel, in the Portuguese city of Coimbra a year later.

This is troubling...

As cancer deaths among firefighters skyrocket, the country’s biggest firefighters union and the city fire chiefs issued a joint warning. The two groups warned that the gear that firefighters wear to protect themselves may be preloaded with cancer-causing chemicals, according to several studies.

Are you used to it?

“Even after years of night shift work, many people do not adjust”

Imagine that. From non shift workers — “but you get used to it, right?”

It’s kind of like a colonoscopy — you know what to expect — but, get used to it?

No, you get used to being tired — or living tired. Grinding. Pushing through.

So there’s been a study, and it pretty much says, no, people don’t “get used to it”.

“Analysis by the University of Warwick statisticians of interruptions to sleep and rhythmic variations in core body temperature showed that night shift workers had LESS THAN HALF the median regularity and quality of sleep of their day-shift colleagues. 48% of the night-shift workers had a disrupted circadian temperature rhythm.”

“Importantly, even workers who had been on night shifts for many years still showed these negative effects on circadian and sleep health. The more years they had been on night work, the more severe the circadian disruption, contradicting widespread assumptions about adaptation to night work.”
