The sleep landscape is also shaped by the patriarchy: research and studies that guide science have been largely focused on men and don’t spend much time considering how midlife changes in estrogen and progesterone impact sleep processes for women. There is also a lot of confusion around which symptoms are linked to changing hormones and which are part of the natural aging process – because sleep changes for both men and women as they age.

Let’s get the facts straight while honouring our own unique experiences and inner wisdom. Let’s do it together because it’s more fun and inspiring.

We need sleep education and support that speaks to us as women, especially as we enter midlife and misinformation about (peri) menopause, muddies the waters in a big way. Women are 2x more likely to bump up against sleep challenges compared to men. We have different hormones and hormone cycles and experience stress differently in our bodies and minds.

We embark on midlife with similar questions around balance, purpose, boundaries, and energy management. We want our sleep to keep nurturing us, not be another thing to worry about.

Yes, our sleep is changing but when we know how and why, and are open to reconnecting with our changing rhythms, needs and priorities – it’s more than manageable. This is what we’ll be doing in our upcoming workshop, the Midlife Sleep Reset.

✨Registration deadline is November 15. Spaces are limited.✨ Our workshop starts on November 20th! 🙌🏼

Sign-up is available through the link or DM me for details. https://www.recoop.care/midlife-sleep-reset.

Women in midlife are fully aware of how critical their sleep is - that chronic crappy sleep can lead to early cognitive decline, ramp up weight gain, impact heart health, mood, immune strength, inflammation, and on and on. It’s pretty much going to impact all of you. And we also know what it feels like to be dragging ourselves around after a string of terrible nights.

The kicker? Knowing the costs of poor sleep dials up the pressure to get a good night - in a way that can actually make it harder to sleep, night after night.

Our worries about our sleep can fuel and cement longer-term sleep struggles by shutting off our natural sleep system - so we find ourselves awake when we don’t want to be.

This can become a familiar pattern that’s a bit insidious and cyclic. We think our thoughts on repeat without realizing how they are impacting our sleep. But by bringing awareness to this dynamic and working with supportive (friendlier) thoughts around our sleep, we transform how we sleep. This is one of the pillars of cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, the most effective treatment for insomnia-related sleep challenges.

Our thoughts are that powerful. So let’s get practice using them for the good of our sleep, and see how things change when we stay onside with ourselves. This is one of MANY elements of sleep we’ll be exploring in our workshop, the Midlife Sleep Reset.

🗓️ Registration is now open until Nov. 15. Details and sign-up are available via in the link below, or DM/email me if you have questions! 👉🏼 https://www.recoop.care/midlife-sleep-reset.

✨Registration is open for the Midlife Sleep Reset!✨ This is for any midlife woman who wants to learn to sleep better and feel better about their sleep. 😴 This workshop is info-rich, action-oriented, supportive and transformative.
Our sleep is changing. Knowing what’s changing and why, and how to support these shifts (with real tools) so we can trust our sleep rather than worry about it – this is what we’re doing here.

🙋🏼‍♀️ We start on November 20th. 🗓️ Details and sign-up are available via the link below. DM/email me if you have questions! 👉🏼 https://www.recoop.care/midlife-sleep-reset.

I’m keeping this one cozy and intimate so if you’re interested - connect soon! Registration closes on Nov. 15.

“It is not surprising that there is a link between menopause and poor sleep. Areas of the brain that are influenced by estrogen and progesterone are also important in sleep regulation and fluctuations in hormone during the menstrual cycle are known to affect sleep patterns.” Dr. Jen Gunter, author of Menopause Manifesto.If ever there was a manifesto this is one for me whenever I have questions around:

👉🏼 the biology of menopause;
👉🏼 how menopause is a strength, not a weakness;
hormone replacement therapy;
👉🏼 the science behind hot flashes, bone health, the links between menopause and dementia;
👉🏼 and OF COURSE how menopause (and perimenopause) impacts sleep.

I refer to this manifesto regularly for myself and in my work with midlife women. Thank you .

Menopause is a time to get informed and empowered - it’s a transition to prepare for, not a time for pathologizing. What do you think? Are you learning more about peri(menopause)? Have you read this one? What resources are you liking? I’m curious to know!

May 23 – FREE Baby Sleep Shaping Sessions for new parents!In honour of Mother’s Day and Maternal Mental Health Week that just passed, I’ve created space for a day of Lightening Sessions for new parents with babies 0-5 months. This is a chance to touch in for a dose of Sleep Shaping support.

The first few months of a baby's life is a MOUNTAINOUS learning curve for new parents. It’s packed with a full array of emotions, exhaustion and information overload. My ✨Sleep Shaping✨ support is designed to validate your experience while offering gentle support, sound education and resources based on what YOU need right now.

I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Calls are 25 minutes!

Sessions will book up fast so DM me right away if you are interested!

Pass on to anyone who could use a little dose of support. 🙌🏼

Even though I work with mamas every week, I often let Mother’s Day slide by without acknowledging it because it is problematic for so many. If you have lost a Mom, feel ambivalent about being a Mom, are in a ‘mothering’ role but don’t identify with the label “Mother”, lost a baby or child or have trouble conceiving (the list goes on) … this day might not feel celebratory, and you are not alone in that. I’m sending extra care your way. 🌷

The recent flurry of attention in the media around midlife women, perimenopause and menopause is full-on and long overdue. I'm finding it awesome and a bit overwhelming, how about you?

I have so much to say on this but for now, as we learn more about perimenopause and sleep issues as one of the symptoms of hormonal changes, it’s important to know that every mid-life human, regardless of biology or gender, experiences changes with sleep!

As we ALL age, our sleep architecture changes and we acquire less deep sleep on average which affects how we sleep and the quality of our sleep. If you are a midlife woman struggling with sleep, I invite you to tap your full circle of care to understand the root of your sleep challenges and know where hormones play a role and where they don’t.

I am here to help and will refer out to hormone specialists if needed while focusing on behavioural and cognitive supports, to get you back on track. Book a discovery call with me – https://www.recoop.care/contact

If you know about sleep science and all of the incredible things that happen to your brain and body while you're asleep, and all of the hazards that come along with poor sleep, then you might feel like sleep has become a high-performance act with super high stakes. The science is amazing and a bit scary. So where is the middle ground? Can we prioritize our sleep and make the moves we need to improve our sleep quality at every age and stage AND hold it lightly enough to trust that our bodies are taking care of us even when our sleep isn’t amazing?

This is my sweet spot. This is the sweet spot I hope to help you find. If you’re a midlife woman who wants to sleep better and feel better about your sleep, my Mildlife Sleep Reset is for you. Join our waitlist – link in bio or reach out to me for a discovery call. recoop.care/midlife-sleep-reset

I'm always talking to parents with older kids who are struggling with sleep. My first question is: when did you start struggling with sleep? They often tell me they've never slept well after having babies. Many of these parents now have teens or kids in their 20’s and beyond. There is a hypervigilance that comes with overnight parenting with babies that can get rooted in habits and mindset LONG after our kids are sleeping through the night. This often gets reinforced once we have teenagers who are up much later than us.

Do you feel like your sleep took a turn after having kids? Do you have teens that now keep you up? How are you handling it, or not? Please share!

Celebrating World Sleep Day over here! 🤗

Sleep is the elixir of life, as sleep expert Matthew Walker puts it so perfectly, "Why would we not want more of that?"

Today I'm celebrating all who are bringing more awareness to the importance of sleep, educating about healthy sleep and sleep challenges, and working with folks who are struggling with sleep. We need all of you, more than ever.

• Leaders and institutions who care about how well-rested their people are.

• Physicians and practitioners who ask their patients about their sleep, and provide assessments, support and resources for those who are struggling.

• The research community that is invested in understanding more about medical and non-medical sleep challenges.

• Doulas and caregivers who support tired parents and hold babies to sleep.

• Policy makers who are paying attention to healthy sleep as a basic human right.

• Wellness coaches and practitioners who offer education on healthy sleep practices as part of a holistic model.

• Advocates and culture shapers who are shifting how we think about sleep and rest.

Huzzah! 🙌🏼❤️🙌🏼

Most of us will encounter bumps with our sleep at some point - illness, injury, grief, trauma, stress, a new baby, depression, anxiety, and hormone shifts – all impact sleep. But no one needs to struggle indefinitely. Speak up and reach out for help. There are lots of us out there who are in your corner. 👋🏼😉

“Healing is not the same as curing. Healing can include insight into the meaning of an illness, learning how to cope with it, deepning a spiritual understanding of life, and coming to a peaceful acceptance of human vulnerability.” - Rachel Harris.

💛

I’ve always preferred a ‘non-fixy’ method to working with sleep challenges. Yes, we can absolutely improve our sleep but, it’s really hard to heal anything sustainably unless we start with deepening insight into ourselves, and the culture and structures that perpetuate imbalances that manifest in all kinds of health and mental health challenges. Healing is more human and more holistic – it touches all of us, not just the parts that we see as broken. Healing is more sustainable and oriented towards overall growth.
