The world is bleak right now.
People are shouting, begging to be heard.
People are angry, not listening to each other, so sure there is only one right, one truth.
People are scared.
And yet. Babies. They keep being born.
The true beacons of hope and purity and non violence and humanity and innocence and pure love. They keep being born. And welcomed.
And I continue to be privileged enough to be invited in to support their journey earthside.

And yet. There are still babies being held hostage. Babies! Please please please let them still be alive. Let them be reunited with their loving, devastated families. Whatever is left of them.
And yet. There are still babies in harms way. Getting caught in the crossfire of evil and hate and defence and revenge and it is unfathomable. It is impossible.

Stop the hate. Stop the rhetoric. Stop shouting without listening. Stop the violence, physical and verbal.
Please please, open your hearts to possibilities.

A time when we are encouraged to look inside, to acknowledge our missteps of the last year and reflect on how we can do better in the coming year.

Inherent in the 10 day period of reflection that comes after Rosh Hashana and before Yom Kippur is the belief that we are all capable of doing better, that we have the ability originating within ourselves, of improving, all we have to do is conceive of how we want to contribute - to our homes, our families, our communities, our cities, our world and even to ourselves.

It is understood that we all make mistakes, have regrets, might have done something unkind or something we arenโ€™t proud of. These 10 Days of Awe are meant to be a time to reflect and mindfully choose to repent and then, vitally, learn from it and evolve accordingly.

Is there anything sweeter?
The preparation, the research, the worry, the anticipation, the scans and checks, the 3 days of prodromal drawn out early labour, the exhaustion, followed by 3 hours of intense active labour and pushing.
And now here we are, 5 days old, at home in the bassinet that once sat empty. Sleeping contendedly. Home.
Itโ€™s all worth it.

The world is literally on fire. The atmosphere is heavy and ominous.
We must keep moving forward.
We also need to protect ourselves and our loved ones.
Even once the haze lifts, which it definitley will, your body will need support moving forward to eliminate all the particles that have been inhaled.

1. Drink something hydrating - Must. Drink. Water/Electrolytes. Hydration Motivator bottle? Electrolyte powder? Whatever resonates. Helps with energy, mood, focus, skin, digestion, you literally will die without it, so DRINK. Please. Thank you.

2. Get Sun - it's finally spring! Get sunshine on your face. Ideally in the first 1/2 hr after waking. Doesn't have to be long. Sunshine on skin & eyeballs in the morning helps regulate circadian rhythm, improves sleep, mood, PMS, more. Any time of day it helps energy. Plants are living things. They can't live without sun. Neither can we.

3. Eat Protein - Fuel for your brain. You will feel tired without it. So many options - check the blog if you need ideas.

Recipe:
Broccoli - finely chopped
8 eggs
1/2 cup shredded cheese
1/2 cup coconut milk
1/4 cup coconut flour
Salt, pepper, garlic powder

Mix all together
Bake at 350 for 15-20 mins, until set

I don't normally go out that far, but when a previous client has moved and wants me at their second birth - what an honour, of course I say yes!
Volunteers make these cutie hand crocheted hats for babies to wear and they are beyond adorable.
I love supporting families through all kinds of births.
This one was a scheduled Caesarean section.
While COVID regulations still prohibit a second support person in the operating room there are still so many areas where doulas can assist, support, provide information, education, remedies and presence to enhance the experience, empower and ultimately improve the overall birthing experience.
Opening up the potential for a gentle Caesarean experience and recovery is something I am very passionate about.

Iโ€™m all about food variety. Some tried and true recipes are essential, but I get bored and I love trying new ones. Not only that, but good diversity improves your microbiome ๐Ÿ‘This blondie recipe is the ๐Ÿ’ฃ

A brand new combination of flavours that may sound wackadoo but is actually magically delicious.
Inspired by:

A. ๐ŸฅถFreezing cold temps outside yesterday = deep desire to turn on the oven โ™จ๏ธ

B. โ€˜s Miso Maple Loaf featured in - ya know I love my fermented miso - but in baked goods?? Revolutionary. But I didnโ€™t want a white flour based confection, so I went searching and experimenting and came up with

C. This delish concoction, inspired by an old recipe I found of

Revolutionary Miso Blondies

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Line an 8x8 pan

Combine wet ingredients:
3 tablespoons Miso Paste
2 Eggs
3/4 cup Maple Syrup
1/2 cup Mixed Nut & Seed Butter
1/4 cup Olive Oil
2 tsp Vanilla

Combine dry ingredients:
1 1/2 cups Almond Flour
1/2 cup Coconut Flour
1/2 tsp Baking Soda
1/2 tsp Salt

Mix wet + dry together

Stir in 1 cup chocolate chips. I used white chocolate, if you wanted to make this dairy free, just use your favourite dairy free chocolate chips

Bake for 35-40 mins until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Cool, cut into 16 squares and enjoy.

I have no interest in making separate meals. Like ever. Dinner every night is plenty tyvm.

But I do love hosting. And sometimes - vegans come for dinner. So I make a meal rich in protein that is tasty and filling enough for everyone. Even the growing, self proclaimed carnivorous teenagers.

This Sesame Noodle dish hits all my regular requirements and more

โœ…Ready in under 30 mins
โœ…Protein
โœ…Fibre
โœ… Veggies
โœ… Forgiving - very substitution friendly
โœ… Gluten free
โœ… Dairy free
โœ… Kid approved

Ingredients:
Block of Tofu
Head of Broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ
Pack of Rice Noodles
Garlic
Sprouts
Crushed nuts or seeds (I used everything but the bagel seasoning)

Sauce:
2 tbsp sesame oil
2 tbsp tamari
2 tbsp rice or apple cider vinegar
1 tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp lemon juice
Fresh ginger

1. Mix together all sauce ingredients
2. Sautรฉ tofu
3. Sautรฉ broccoli with garlic
4. Boil noodles
5. Mix together cooked tofu, broccoli and noodles with the sauce.
6. Top with sprouts and seeds.

So easy. So tasty. So vegan. Enjoy!

Kids (and adults) should really be p**ping daily. At minimum. 1-3 times per day really.

When they donโ€™t (not uncommon) - there is a reason. Not just - thatโ€™s our family constitution. Nope. That may be true, but constipation is an issue that needs to be addressed. Did you know that constipation can be a cause of bed wetting, inability to hold the bladder? It can lead to nutrient deficiencies - you can't absorb all you need from your food if itโ€™s just sitting there in your colon. It can even lead to hormonal imbalances - if you donโ€™t p**p you donโ€™t excrete the bits you donโ€™t need - hormones, toxins, extra crap. Literally.

The medical model - Restoralax - Prescribed freely for constipation in anyone from infants to seniors, what is this magical powder?

Polyethylene glycol 3350 is a powerful laxative. It draws water into the intestines, softening the stool, causing colon muscles to contract & force a BM.
The label states it is used for the relief of OCCASIONAL constipation. It also says โ€œDo not use this product for longer than 7 days.โ€ Most people who are on it are on it for years! That means their bodyโ€™s natural urges are being overridden by this drug. It will create dependency. If your body is not digesting food & moving it through your digestive tract on its own there is a reason. I implore you to figure out why. More label info: โ€œThe safety and effectiveness of using this medication have not been established for children. Do not give this medication to children under 18 years of age.โ€ That means when your pediatrician prescribes it for your child it is โ€œoff label useโ€ Not studied in children. It is effective, no doubt about that. But it is absolutely not fixing the problem.

Sharing Chanukah traditions, lighting candles, singing songs, playing dreidels and telling stories with my favourite group of 7 and 8 year old city kids. This is how we combat hate, ignorance and fear - through love and sharing and light and laughter.

Hospital Volunteers knitting tiny holiday hats for newborns for the sole pleasure of spreading cheer may be the sign we all need that although the medical system is without a doubt, deeply overburdened and the shortages of childrenโ€™s medications in this country is a shameful travesty on the part of the far higher ups, there remain good people within the broken system, doing their part to keep the whole fiery thing rolling along adorably.
