My perimenopause peeps! I know a lot of you are being told that the birth control pill is your only option to "regulate" your hormones, but for many of us menopausal hormone therapy is a better option. 🤔

While the pill wins in terms of pregnancy prevention ⛔️🤰, for people where that isn't a concern, menopausal hormone therapy MAY be a better option.

The biggest differences between the pill and MHT are:

1. MHT uses bio-identical hormones - these are hormones that are identical to the ones your body makes, not synthetic alternatives. This means our body responds to them the same way it did to the hormones when YOU were making them.

2. The levels of hormones in MHT are much lower - the estrogen level in menopausal hormone therapy is 1/4 of what you find in the average birth control pill. This can be a game changer as we transition into menopause and want to support our body in adjusting to the lower levels of hormones.

Got questions? Hit me up in my DMs or book a 10 minute discovery call to tap into my brain and see what you find in there. 🧠🤯

My goal for every damn day - be perfectly unperfect.

Do my best, unperfectly.
Show up for myself, unperfectly.
Be there for others, unperfectly.
Smash my goals, unperfectly.

I'm pretty damn good at this unperfectness. I don't think I'll ever quit. 🔥

Hormones aren't the ONLY cause of acne in adults, but they sure do add a bit of f**kery to the mix don't they???

In the days before our period we see a shift in our estrogen to testosterone balance, tipping towards higher testosterone levels. This can exacerbate acne in the days before our period. ⚖️

Adult acne is THE WORST, am I right? Ugh.

Acne in adults isn't the same as acne in teens, and it can take a multi-faceted approach to get it under control.

There are a LOT of different things that can influence acne in adult women:

⚪️ diet - including dairy, chocolate (sorry!), whey protein, and overeating
⚪️ stress levels - and of course, acne can increase stress levels as well
⚪️ medications - corticosteriods, excess B12 (get tested friends!), antibiotics, and others can contribute to acne
⚪️ inflammation - from smoking, sun exposure and environment
⚪️ hormone imbalances - PCOS, excess androgens, thyroid imbalances, and perimenopause/ menopause can all influence acne

Treating acne in adults isn't going to be as simple as slapping some cream on it. You're going to need to find a plan that addresses your influences, and is sustainable for you.

Low estrogen is common during multiple phases of a woman's life:

1. During PMS
2. After pregnancy/ during breastfeeding
3. During perimenopause
4. During menopause

Low estrogen levels change the way our body responds to, and produces serotonin. And this can leave us reeling.

If you're having any of these symptoms, it might be worthwhile talking to your health care provider about your estrogen levels.

OK! So some of you aren't sure if you are having heavy periods. 🤔🧐

First of all, TRUST YO'SELF!
If you think they are heavy, they are heavy!! 🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸

BUT, if you still aren't sure... here are some criteria you can use.

🩸🩸 if you need to change your period product more often than every 2 hours
🩸🩸 if you double up on period products - like wearing a cup AND period underwear
🩸🩸 having to get up in the night to change period products
🩸🩸 you experience flooding, where the flow is so fast it feels like you are wetting your pants
🩸🩸 large blood clots, especially those larger than a nickel
🩸🩸 feeling SO DAMN EXHAUSTED during your period

Heavy periods may be common, but they are not normal and you should get lab work done to understand what the potential causes and consequences of your heavy periods might be.

Do not ignore heavy periods! There are several different reasons we can develop heavy periods during our lifetime.

🩸PCOS or anovulation
🩸thyroid imbalances, especially hypothyroidism
🩸fibroids
🩸perimenopause
🩸miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy
🩸medications, including SSRIs

If you are noticing your periods are heavier than they used to be, it's time for a visit to your friendly neighbourhood hormone health practitioner, and some lab testing!

Fiber isn't sexy, but fiber IS important.

Fiber can be helpful for hormone balance because it influences the action of bacteria and enzymes that help support estrogen detoxification - together known as the estrobolome.

Remember, YOU are a strong influence over your hormones. And fiber can be a powerful way to be a good influence!

YOU are the greatest influence on your hormones - so my darling, are you a force for good? 👸 Or evil? 😈

Some of the most important ways we can influence our hormones include:
🔥 getting enough sleep
🔥 eating enough protein
🔥 limiting refined carbohydrates and added sugars
🔥 avoiding alcohol
🔥 managing stress
🔥 moving our bodies regularly
🔥 having positive self talk and self compassion
🔥 avoiding plastics and endocrine disrupting chemicals

And can these small efforts really make an impact? You bet they can.
