The middle stage of dementia is often the longest. It marks a greater decline in memory, thinking, and day-to-day abilities.
During this stage:
- Cognitive decline becomes more noticeable
- The person may still have some awareness of their condition
- Tasks like dressing, cooking, or managing medications become more difficult
For caregivers, this is when:
- Your role in care increases significantly
- Long-term care may be considered for the first time
- Support from adult day programs, respite care, and other services becomes essential
