"How are they not yet compensated since Bill 124 was ruled unconstitutional? Why is this government not looking at the long-term health of our future, our children, by doing everything they can to retain these incredible, valuable, skilled workers here in Ontario?" - Maureen Kelly, past midwifery client.
Ontarians see the value in compensating midwives fairly. It's time the government does too.
Read the letter to the editor:

The province should be doing everything it can to retain these valuable skilled workers, a reader says of midwives.

Read the article in the Toronto Star, "Ontario midwives should get pay increases, new mediator report says: ‘We have a burnout and attrition crisis.'"

It is important to note: the mediator's recommendation would maintain parity with comparable primary care providers — not exceed it. Physicians and nurse practitioners received higher annual increases AND catch-up pay after Bill 124. Midwives did not.

Ontario’s refusal to compensate midwives for the income they lost under Bill 124 us contributing to a shortage of services, mediator says.

The Association of Ontario Midwives is calling on the Ministry of Health to implement recommendations made by an independent third-party Mediator to treat midwives comparably to other health professions--or risk losing them.

In her report, the Mediator, Beverly Mathers, recommended that midwives receive similar redress provided to physicians, nurses and other public sector workers to make up for the province's unconstitutional compensation restraint legislation and policies.

The report states that "... there is no mathematical equation that puts Ontario's midwives anywhere but further behind economically" because of the Ministry's compensation restraints.

Midwives, students and clients met with MPPs at Queen’s Park this week to demonstrate how midwifery care improves access, strengthens communities and offers real solutions to Ontario’s primary care challenges.

The message was clear: Midwifery is essential, and the time to invest is now.

Thank you to the MPPs and supporters who attended and contributed to these vital conversations.
