Taping is not just for athletes! It is an effective way of providing stability, support, and proprioceptive feedback to joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Often, this improves confidence, helping someone with or recovering from an injury move better and return to activities sooner. This can be beneficial to a wide range of clients, including office workers seeking to alleviate upper back and neck pain, weekend warriors looking to enhance their running after an ankle injury, or individuals managing back pain during pregnancy.

And not all tape is K-Tape! Depending on whether we are trying to restrict movement, promote movement or help with pain, there are different types of tape a therapist can use.

Discuss with your therapist whether taping can be beneficial for you. [link below]

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture: What’s the Difference?

They look similar—both use thin, sterile needles inserted into the body—but dry needling and acupuncture are quite different in purpose, philosophy, and technique.

🔹 Dry Needling (DN):

- Based on Western medicine & anatomy
- Targets muscle trigger points (tight knots) to reduce pain, tension, and improve movement
- Great for sports injuries, chronic pain, muscle tightness, nerve irritation, and more
- You may feel a twitch response or local soreness afterward—that’s normal!

🔹 Acupuncture:

- Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
- Aims to balance energy flow (Qi) through meridians in the body
- Helpful for chronic and systemic conditions that can be contributing to your pain (rheumatoid conditions, fibromyalgia, migraines, stress, chronic pain, trauma-induced pain, postpartum pain, etc.)
- Treatments are typically more holistic, focusing on the whole body and multiple systems

⚖️ Which is right for you?
It depends on your goals! For muscle pain, tension, or movement issues, dry needling might be more direct. For stress, chronic issues or whole-body balance, acupuncture may be a better fit.

At Foundation Physiotherapy, we have practitioners who offer both. We’re happy to help you decide what works best for your recovery and build it into your plan. Ask your practitioner next time you're in!

Give a big Foundation welcome to Tim and Amanda!

Tim will be joining us at our CityPlace location as an RMT. He is an F1 fan and is ready to deliver the therapy you need to meet your goals! 🏎️

Amanda brings her expertise as a Pelvic Health Physiotherapist to our Corktown location. Her guilty pleasure is croissants and coffee. Outside the clinic, you’ll find her with her toddler at the park (she’s the best!), cycling, walking, paddling, or practicing yoga 🧘🏻‍♀️

What is cupping, and how can it help?? ☕

Cupping therapy involves briefly placing inverted plastic, glass, or silicone cups on certain parts of the body, creating suction on the skin. This suction creates negative pressure, allowing for several healing effects to occur:

- Improves circulation in the tissues: Cupping increases blood circulation to the area where the cups are placed. This can promote cell repair. It may also help form new connective tissues and create new blood vessels in the tissue.
-Helps to clear stagnation and remove interstitial debris: The vacuum formed by cupping draws up the old non-circulating stagnant blood and sticky fluids from the area, bringing them up to the surface and away from the injury for faster recovery
- Helps reduce inflammation and swelling: Increased blood flow enables your body to dispose of toxins, restores lymphatic circulation, and helps remove edema (excess fluid)
Breaks down scar tissue: Cupping can help break up scar tissue adhesions, allowing better flow of blood and lymph and freeing muscular tissue for improved range of motion and performance.

At Foundation, our RMTs, Physios and Chiros can incorporate cupping into your treatment plan. Head to the link below to learn more!
