Posted • If you want to educate your Spanish-speaking familia/community on the important subject matter have them read this or read it to them yourself. Thank you for putting this together! It was definitely much needed. Note: If you need the pdf version of this... click 's link in bio. Now let's start the conversation. 🗣 ⠀
⠀
🔁: I quickly put this together today after seeing the need in my community. Many people are asking how to talk to their families in Spanish and in my opinion this conversation has to go beyond using certain concepts or terms. We need to explain and provide context that they may not have. What you see here are brief and basic explanations we can use to start talking about what is happening. I will continue to work on a more comprehensive guide with the collaboration of other community members, but for now this is what I was able to come up with.⠀
And of course, I need to add this disclaimer: there are different ways to say and explain things. This is MY way, with the words I use with MY family and my students, and that are obviously based on my beliefs. My intent is not to provide definite definitions but a starting point for these conversations in Spanish. Personally, I use the term Black in Spanish because there are Black people that do not identify with the term “Afro-American” (for example, Afro-Latinxs). I’ve added both here but I think it is important for our familias to know that there are Afro-Latinxs, so you may add that term as well.⠀
Also keep in mind that as non-Black Latinxs, we have to unlearn our own history of racism and oppression. This will take time, the first step is to have these conversations. I hope this is useful.⠀
PS: yes, I’m aware that there’s a couple of typos. Caught them after posting and it had already taken off so I left it as is. I’m not bothered by them. If you are, then look away. But plz don’t message me about 1 typo, focus on supporting instead. Peace.⠀

Posted • Did you experience a pregnancy in Canada in the last ten years?

Some people in Canada tell stories of exceptional, kind, and supportive care and others speak of disrespect, discrimination, and/or mistreatment during their pregnancy or childbirth.

There is very little research about how different experiences of care may link to health outcomes. This is the first study in Canada where community members decided what is most important to understand to improve quality of care for childbearing families.

Your story can help improve care during pregnancy and childbirth for all communities. Complete the survey at www.respcct.ca (clickable link in bio).
