“Managing Anxiety on Thanksgiving”- Mindfulness Monday

Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians celebrating thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and spend time with family, create memories, be reflective of God’s goodness and of course eat lots of food 😉

However, Thanksgiving celebrations can also be a time of triggers to some, especially if you have clinical anxiety. If you have an anxiety disorder, holidays like Thanksgiving can trigger racing thoughts, extra stress, and maybe even panic attacks.

If you choose to celebrate Thanksgiving, let’s look at some ways you can manage your anxiety while still enjoying yourself.

During the celebration:

Practice mindfulness and breathing: Use deep breathing, meditation, or other grounding techniques to stay calm.

Prevent Burnout — It’s Okay to Say No
Take breaks: Retreat to a quiet space if you feel overwhelmed.

Incorporate physical activity: A short walk or yoga session can help release tension.
Focus on gratitude: Shift your focus from anxieties to things you are thankful for to help manage negative feelings.

Establish an escape plan: Have a reason and a plan to leave early if needed.

Dealing with difficult family dynamics: Set conversational boundaries ahead of time. Ask open-ended questions to get others talking about themselves to shift the focus away from sensitive topics.

Practice Gratitude this Thanksgiving. “Gratitude, at its core, is the practice of recognizing and appreciating the positive aspects of our lives even when there are many challenges taking place.”

October Series: Living in an Anxious World (Wisdom Wednesday).

Mental Illness Awareness Week

“There is no health without mental health.”
That quote is from Dr. Brock Chisholm, the first Director-General of the World Health Organization.

Understanding Anxiety- “Everyone experiences anxiety, but not everyone knows how to manage it.”-Samantha Renesha Campbell

What Exactly Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is an emotional and physical response to perceived danger, threat, or uncertainty.

“Anxiety is how you feel and think, not who you are.”-Samantha Renesha Campbell

Everyday Anxiety vs. Anxiety Disorder

Everyday Anxiety is a normal human reaction to stress. Anxiety Disorder, on the other hand, is more intense and persistent.

“everyday anxiety motivates; anxiety disorder immobilizes.”

Why We’re So Anxious Today

The problem isn’t that we feel anxious; it’s that we rarely take the time to slow down and process what our anxiety is trying to tell us.

There is Hope in Healing-Anxiety is treatable.

Remember: anxiety doesn’t have to be the enemy. It’s a signal from your body saying, “I need care.” When we learn to listen to that message instead of running from it, we move from fear to freedom.

So, as you move through this week and beyond, remember:
You are not your anxiety. You are more than your fears, and you have the power to live beyond them.
