If you aren’t teaching Yoga from a philosophical base, you aren’t teaching Yoga - you’re teaching movement.

Yoga is not something you DO, it’s an experience. We arrive in the state of Yoga, which is when the mind is clear of clutter. This is directly from the Sutras of Patanjali (1:2), one of the foundational texts on Yoga.

And sure, we can arrive there through asana, but that is only 1 of the 8 limbs. Asana as we have come to know it through Astanga, or hot power yoga, or even Yin or Restorative Yoga are newer (less than 100 years old), despite evidence of Yoga being closer to 6000 years old.

This is why Yoga Foundations is a 100% theory based course. We need to understand, realize, and experience the state of Yoga so we can begin to understand Yoga’s true power.

Join us for our next course starting Oct 22nd. Split between virtual and in person dates in both Toronto and Ottawa in Nov. ✨ link in bio.

This could be the start of your 200-hr journey, a refresh or simply to learn more. Spaces still available, we hope you'll join us.

How to Begin a Meditation Practice

Step #1 – Sit down, close your eyes, quiet your mind.

The hard truth is that is really what you need to do. The reality, as we know, it’s not quite that simple. If you have been wanting to start a meditation practice or have been struggling to stay committed, try working with the following tips.

1. Be comfortable.

Over time it will become more comfortable to sit for longer periods as your back and hips get used to it. Until that happens, get a good quality meditation cushion or even a firm décor pillow or extra yoga mat. Sit on the edge so that your hip bones tip slightly forward. If your legs start to cramp, move and re-adjust. Again, as your body gets used to sitting it will get easier over time.

2. Schedule it in.

Let’s be honest with ourselves on what it takes to get things done these days. You schedule coffee with your BFF weeks in advance, so schedule your daily (yes – I said daily) meditation. Find a minimum of 10 minutes (working up to 20) everyday, preferably at the same time. Use an alarm, write it in your diary, whatever it takes to keep you accountable.

3. Get help.

Why try it alone? There are incredible tools out there designed to help you be consistent with your meditation practice. Apps like Insight Timer are extremely popular, though there are many others. Remember, we have free meditations in the library section of our community app! If you find the silence deafening, or struggle to quiet your thoughts work with different techniques until you find what works best with you.

And the end of the day, consistency is key. There is also a reason it is called meditation PRACTICE. It needs to be practiced and it takes practice. I promise you, if you give it a solid effort you will experience its benefits: clarity, focus, presence, just to name a few; you will be hooked in for life.

✨Join me on Saturday, September 20th 1-3pm EST for a live/virtual Meditation Workshop: Cultivating Calm + Clarity. Learn meditation techniques and receive a 21-day meditation to fuel your daily practice. Can’t join live? it will also be recorded.

09/05/2025

The key to mental well-being is in establishing daily self-care practices that speak to our different layers of self: physical, energetic, emotional, mental and of course simply joy.

From what I have discovered both through my own personal experience, but also the work I have done with my students is that mental well-being is achieved through all the small things that we do each day. That all of these small things like planning a nutritious meal, going for an afternoon walk or calling our BFF, add up to powerful shifts in how we feel.

Another very important element to this is taking time each day to quiet our mind and sit in stillness, or more commonly known as meditation. It took me years to finally establish a daily meditation practice. I always had such wonderful excuses and reasons why I just couldn’t take the time, as I’m sure you do too, until enough was enough.

My meditation practice has been a game changer for me and so ingrained into my routine if I miss it in the morning it feels like I’ve missed my morning cup of coffee. I use my time in meditation intuitively to release tension from my body. This grounds me, reminding me that my own mental well-being is my primary focus, and the other thoughts slipping through are secondary or even lower on the priority schedule.

I become fully present and this carries with me through the day. I find that I can pause often in my day and just reflect on my morning practice or become quite still in my mind for a minute or two to help clear my thoughts while I’m working or writing.

Has meditation become your non-negotiable yet?

Join Lisa Greenbaum for a transformative 2-hour live/virtual meditation workshop designed to deepen your understanding of meditation and help you build a sustainable home practice. Whether you’re brand new to meditation or looking to re-energize your practice, this experience will give you the tools and structure to make meditation a part of your daily life.

Meditation is one of the most effective practices for supporting mental health and overall well-being, and my daily practice has been imperative for me to help manage both the highs and lows on this journey of life.

This interactive session blends theory and practice so you leave with both knowledge and personal experience. Together, we’ll explore: how meditation works, different meditation techniques and practical strategies.
✨✨✨
Your Takeaway:
At the end of the workshop, you’ll receive access to a 21-Day Guided Meditation Practice through the Sangha Student portal to support your journey beyond this session.

More ❤ from our students!

Yoga for Wellness: Trauma Theory is a 2-day live/virtual course Sept 6-7th. Learn about the effects of trauma and chronic stress on our over all well-being and how to best support your students. Take this training on its own, or this could be the first step towards your 200-hr YTT or 125-hr Therapeutic Yoga Path.

I was excited and nervous coming in to teach the first full day workshop at the Yoga Show in Toronto after 3 years of missing the event post-pandemic. A lot had happened in those few years, and individually and globally we were carrying a lot.

I introduced myself and the topic for the day - Becoming Trauma Aware: How to better support your students in Yoga. I then asked the group to introduce themselves, but before the introductions began, I dropped in a small but meaningful parameter to their shares. It went something like this…

“Pretty much everyone that is drawn to study trauma-informed practices, is because of lived experience. If you would like to share that you have experienced trauma, please do - BUT, please do not share how or what your specific experience(s) are. We can never know what others are going through, or have gone through, and what may no longer trigger us can easily trigger others. We are here to learn about the effects of trauma on our brain and nervous system, to gain perspective and compassion, not to get out the shovel and start unearthing all of our past pain.”

I will never forget the sigh of relief that came from everyone in the room!

Truthfully, I said this because I desperately needed to protect myself. I was still experiencing high symptoms of PTSD and I was worried that if I was triggered, I wouldn’t be able to deliver the session effectively. However, in laying this out for the group I helped to establish a space of safety for everyone there.

This is now how I begin every single discussion around understanding trauma. If this is what has prevented you from studying trauma, please know that I can hold space for you.

This is also why I have shifted the theory portion of our Yoga for Wellness training to a live/virtual session. So you can take this information in within the comfort of your own personal space. Cuddle with your pets, make a cup of tea in your favourite mug, do what you need to do to take in this learning that is equally empowering as it is educational.

I hope to see you Sept 6-7 at Yoga for Wellness: Trauma Theory for our next live/virtual training.
